Is this America’s next $1 trillion industry? [DWR Logo]( July 26, 2024 Hi Reader Growth expectations are growing for this industry, but they're still too low. Once you see the news this week, you’ll see why we think this way. Now, you know the backstory. Ozempic burst onto the scene two years ago. The story was unavoidable. The media campaign sent Ozempic sales soaring. They were just under $5 billion before all the hype. Sales jumped to $9 billion the first year after it. Then $14 billion last year. And it’s still going up with an average forecast around $17 billion for this year. That’s massive growth under most circumstances. But it’s even more impressive when considering the competition. Ozempic is one of multiple other GLP-1 drugs that are turning from diabetes treatments into weight loss treatments. Competition is so fierce that Ozempic might not even be the best-selling GLP-1 after this year. That’s the start of the story that everyone knows. Here’s where it gets far more interesting for investors. Weight loss is a huge market, but it is just one market. The key to maintaining exponential growth that will blow past current expectations will be new markets. That’s where GLP-1’s will really show their strength. This week we saw how the market is going to expand. UK regulators approved Wegovy, a GLP-1 drug to be “prescribed for prevention of cardiovascular events in people with obesity” This is a big step forward in two ways. First, it lowers the prescription hurdle for doctors. Before the drug was just for obesity. Now it’s for heart health. It’s a subtle change, but you don’t just need an ultra-high BMI to get the prescribed it after this change. Second, it puts it in the realm of cardiovascular drugs. Cardiovascular drugs aren’t growing as fast as they once did, but the mature market is huge. The chart shows its set to hit $210 billion by 2032: [Chart] That’s a massive market that shows the demand level. There’s still a lot of research being done on GLP-1 and there’s even more potential applications. With the amount of money on the line, we expect many more stones to be unturned in the quest for new GLP-1 applications.
