April 23, 2024 Hello , The bears are out for Tesla. The EV giant is set to release earnings today and there are many reasons to worry. But all of these reasons could make the company an [even bigger winner after this storm passes.]( In the short run though, things are bad. Tesla posted a sales decline last quarter. It laid off 14,000 of its global workforce. It started offering huge discounts to get volume up. And it’s stock has reflected all of this. Tesla shares are down 46% in the last five months. Has everything gone wrong that can go wrong? The short answer is “no, there could be a lot more pain ahead.” The problems are fundamental to EVS. For example, many consumers don’t want them. That’s well-known. But the real problem is that, over the last year, more consumers don’t want them. Consumer sentiment is going the wrong way. Acceptance of EVs is actually declining. That alone is bad. But there’s another structural problem to EVs. The areas with high adoption rates have been highly penetrated (i.e. Teslas and EVs everywhere in San Francisco), but the rest of the market has barely moved into them. This map shows the EV deployment across the U.S. by county: The natural markets for EVs – high density and high gas prices – have jumped in big. But the rest of the country isn’t buying in yet. All of this is a major headwind for Tesla and it could cause another rough earnings announcement. Sure, there will be talk about a “pivot to AI” or some robotaxi announcement. But there are big problems for EVs that aren’t changing anytime soon. There is, however, one catalyst for them that few analysts ever mention. It has the power to make the EV industry a huge winner again and make investors moving in now a fortune too.
