April 22, 2024 Hello , Out with the old, in the new. Thatâs what is shaping up to be the top theme of 2024. After a raucous start to the year, the Nasdaq is showing cataclysmic signs of weakness. The Index is down 8% this month and accelerating. There arenât many catalysts for a turnaround either with Fed-fueled bonanza off the table now. So youâre left with a choice. You can be âbraveâ and hold out through the storm. Or, if you look at the chart below, focus on whatâs just starting to move. If youâre into taking the easy road, check out this chart that shows relative valuations of tech stocks to commodities: Itâs reached an extreme it only has once before. There are quite a few parallels between now and the last time it was at this level during the dot-com bubble too.. The most obvious one is high expectations. Yes, the internet was the future back then, but it was going to take a long time to play out and there would only be a few major winners that would emerge from that bubble. In fact, some of the biggest winners were just getting started (Google) or not even founded yet (Meta). The same will be true today with the current tech bubble.
