April 16, 2024 Hello , Project “Stargate” is set to [catapult AI deployment]( at a faster pace than most people still don’t fully grasp. Although official details are scant, the Stargate is expected to be a joint venture that combines the advanced tech of Open AI (the ChatGPT company) and the extensive resources of Microsoft. It’s expected to cost more than $100 billion. That’s a major acceleration of 3X over Microsoft’s capital projects last year. And the rumored goal is to “reduce the companies’ reliance on Nvidia.” The last part – getting away from Nvidia – is the key part for investors today. Microsoft has been developing its own line of highly-specialized chips. The “Maia” and “Cobalt” line of chips are some of the earliest and are expected to be the foundation for Stargate and other major data center projects. This all would be a major step away from Nvidia. And the way Nvidia is valued – as if the current overwhelming demand for its chips will last forever – this development could be a disaster for Nvidia shareholders. . The chart below shows the staggering level of Nvidia growth over the last few years: The spike at the end covers the last few quarters. The rapid rise shows the direct impact of the global data center boom finding an even higher growth gear. Nvidia has been the go-to source for the processing required by the large language models that are powering the AI-tech buildout. It’s been a spectacular run for the shares too. Nvidia is now valued at more than $2 trillion – more valuable than Google, Amazon, and Berkshire Hathaway. But with the Stargate project expected to come online by 2028 (which is early enough for big investors to start making moves now), Nvidia’s days as America’s third most valuable company could be numbered. There is great growth ahead, but it may not be enough for the current valuation. That’s why we’ll start focusing on other ways to play AI as this hardware side maybe running out of upside room.
