But not because the slowdown is a sign of dwindling housing demand. Instead, it’s a sign a tight market is about to get even tighter. Here’s the stats. Housing starts dropped 14% and the rate of new houses and the annual rate dropped to just over 1.3 million. That’s a big drop in a market that is already critically undersupplied.
