What followed was a dessert service of dreams. I'm pretty sure there was eight courses for this. The creamsicle was light and airy, the cappucino semifreddo is easily the most delicious coffee based dessert I've ever had, the chocolates, the beignets, everything was top notch. I don't believe there was any item I did not sample and enjoy. If Per Se ever did a dessert tasting menu I would certainly be there. As an added benefit Thomas Keller, the head chef and owner of Per Se along with a myriad of restaurants including the French Laundry, was in town and personally visited every table including ours to see how we were enjoying the evening and our thoughts on the meal. This was a really nice gesture and one I very much appreciated as such opportunities are pretty rare. All in all I think per se definitely still has that spark and is a very impressive restaurant. The sticker price is high, but the experience is commensurate. One of those experiences where I struggle to explain the combination of deflation after enormous anticipation, and execution that exceeds most but doesn't measure up to the best. When we last came here, it was like the search for the Holy Grail. Our foodie Mecca. The anticipation was sky-high and yet, when looking back on the meal, after all the other fantastic meals we've had since then, it's almost sad to wonder what all the fuss was about. As noted in my starred ratings, this wasn't a bad high fine dining experience. But neither did it stand out from the other Michelin-starred dinners that we've had. I will say that service was attentive, very friendly. But what this Michelin service lacked was anticipatory actions by the staff, novel food ideas, amazing wine pairings. This meal was absolutely head and shoulders above any meal I could have here in town, but again, comparing it to other high-end fine dining, it felt so very average Our menu consisted of: "Oysters and pearls" - Chef Keller classic and one of the best dishes Grilled cauliflower salad Potato crusted halibut Abalone "en piccata" Quail breast - also excellent "Calotte de boeuf" Jasper Hills Farm's "Winnimere" Assortment of desserts I typically have a laundry list of excellent to very good dishes in my lists, but rarely have we encountered such a nice dinner that left so little impression on us. We'd like to come back, and we still have to hit up French Laundry, but our hope is that the next time we come back, we can just as floored as we've been elsewhere in the country, Went there for our anniversary! This was an experience that would be rather hard to describe. We made reservation months in advance. Then we got a confirmation call a few days prior the date. We were I inquired about any allergies and sensitivities. I told them about my gluten free preferences which was considered in the most thoughtful manner. The space is elegant. It has a feel of an upscale hotel, sophisticated and cold. We arrived early and were invited to start with a drink in a waiting area. Our spectacular table was ready shortly. It was a table near the window overlooking the statue of Columbus. We even got special menus with our names on them to honor our anniversary. The food was phenomenal and the presentation was impeccable. Our main waiter was awesome, unlike everybody else in the restaurant he was funny, and very personable. He told us stories and made jokes. Our wine waiter was not as personable. He just brought wine for all the 10 courses that we had. He never told us why he picked what he picked for us. And we barely could understand him. But he was definitely a character.
