ð ð¬ 10 key questions to ask clients before designing
âThe discovery phase is the heartbeat of a project and where youâll find those small gems of information that help your project thrive. This isnât the time to assume anything about your client or impose your trendy creative ideas. This is the time to ask questions and listen!â
Weâve all been there beforeâcreative block hits, or a miscommunication happens with your client. All of a sudden, youâve found yourself in an endless cycle of revisions with a mountain of files piling up labeled âFINAL-FINAL-FINAL5.ai.â So what went wrong? Well, youâre probably not asking the right questions.
Freelance Creative Director & Designer Katie Cooper joined us on the Dribbble blog to share the [top 10 questions]( she likes to ask clients to better align project goals and vision. Katie is a firm believer in [asking the right questions]( and doing more of the work upfront:
âThe more you put into the research and discovery phase of a project, the easier the design process becomes.â
[Brand Discovery Questionnaire]
Hereâs a sampling of the questions Katie urges you to ask your next client during the brand discovery process:
-
âï¸âWhatâs the 30K-foot view?
-
ââWhereâs the company in 5 years?
-
ð§ âWhat problem are you solving?
-
â¤ï¸âWhat practical benefits do you offer?
-
ð£ï¸âWhat do customers say about you?
You may have noticed that none of these questions [are specific to design]( or visual style. But if you donât know the why behind your clientâs brand, you might as well be throwing a rock into a dark room and hoping it hits the target. So rememberânever assume, always listen, and always ask why.
