I wanted to give you an update on what I've been up to History says, Don’t hope On this side of the grave... But then, once in a lifetime The longed-for tidal wave Of justice can rise up, And hope and history rhyme. -“The Cure of Troy” by Seamus Haney Dear {NAME}, It is has been a couple of months since the last time you heard from me. But I have been busy. You probably know that in late January I was tapped by President Biden to help guide his historic Supreme Court nominee, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, through the Senate confirmation process. On April 7, we were successful when Judge Jackson was confirmed by a 53-47 vote. It was, to say the least, an honor and a privilege to be a part of this inspirational process. You may have also had an occasion to hear President Biden quote the above excerpt from Seamus Haney’s poem “The Cure of Troy.” It is one of his favorites and I thought of it as I stood on the Senate floor and witnessed the historic, and joyous, confirmation vote. I thought of it because I have been blessed to have had more than one moment in my lifetime where I truly felt that a “long for tidal wave of justice” had risen up and “hope and history” had rhymed. It happened twice when we secured the convictions of two former Klansmen for the murders of four young African American girls who died in the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church. Many would say it happened again on December 12, 2017, when you lifted me to an improbable Senate election victory. And it most assuredly happened again on April 7, 2022 with the confirmation of the first African American woman to the Supreme Court of the United States. But as joyous and as inspirational as this nomination was – as this judge was – it also reminds us how much work lies ahead. Despite her incredible qualifications Judge Jackson had to suffer through the political gamesmanship by Republicans seeking to shore up support from the radical right of their party. It was an embarrassing display of raw partisan politics. In the end only three Republicans could bring themselves to be on the right side of history with their votes. Only three. And that is why I am back. To continue to bring a voice of reason to our political discourse. To stand up and speak out for democracy and equality and the idea that is America. To continue to persuade people to join us on the right side of history rather than the destructive path of authoritarianism. I hope you will continue the journey with me.
