Welcome to the LGBTQ+ Pride Month edition of the DLCC's newsletter, June 16th, 2024   [This week we're highlighting LGBTQ+ progress and calling out the GOP’s anti-LGBTQ+ agenda. ]( Here’s what you need to know this week for Pride month: --------------------------------------------------------------- 🌈 History of Pride: What is Pride Month? June is Pride Month, a month celebrating LGBTQ+ culture and rights. [Click here to learn more about the month's origins, LGBTQ+ history, and the stakes of the protests →]( --------------------------------------------------------------- 👏 State Democrats are working to protect LGBTQ+ rights ❤️ In Colorado, the state’s Democratic trifecta passed a Bill of Rights for Foster Youth, which includes protections for children in foster care to express their gender identity freely. 🧡 In Virginia, the Democrat-controlled legislature passed a bill enshrining same-sex marriage into state law. 💛 In Washington, Democrats passed a law requiring LGBTQ+ history to be taught in schools. 💚 In Florida, Democrats are working to repeal the state’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws, including those that restrict access to gender-affirming care and ban gender identity and sexual orientation from being discussed in public schools. 💙 In Wisconsin, Democrats worked to remove language in the state constitution that defines marriage as between one man and one woman. They also tried to amend the state constitution to include protections for equal rights on the basis of gender identity, race, sexual orientation, and more. Republicans blocked both efforts. --------------------------------------------------------------- While Democrats fight for LGBTQ+ freedoms, Republicans continue attacking them, here’s just one example: 🚨 Colorado Republicans call for the burning of Pride flags After the state’s Republican party sent an email with the subject line “God Hates Pride,” the party posted on X calling for the burning of pride flags. [The GOP is relentlessly targeting the LGBTQ+ community during a month designated to celebrate equality and queer visibility →]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Two things you can do to help support the LGBTQ+ community: 🏳️‍🌈 Learn: LGBTQ+ Equality by state The Movement Advancement Project (MAP) tracks over 50 different LGBTQ-related laws and policies. Check out their interactive map to find out about the policies affecting the LGBTQ+ community. [Click here to see the map →]( 🗳️ Make a difference this Pride Month: Democrats prepare for upcoming races Electing Democrats to state legislatures is the most impactful way to defend LGBTQ+ rights and freedoms, which are on the line in states across the country in 2024.
