Happy Monday! You've opened this email because you're not getting heard as much as you'd like to right now. You're posting content, but your not seeing numbers go up - it always seems to reach the same number of people and that's really frustrating. Today's email might possibly be the most valuable email I've ever sent out, so even if you don't get a chance to read it now, mark it unread and catch up when you have the time to dedicate to it. As if you implement this well, this will be the difference between not seeing anything change and building a fanbase in 2023. This is the problem... The problem is we communicate with everyone on social media in the same way. This is what we want them to do: Find you for the first time > watch content > visit Spotify > become a lifelong fan It's a lovely idea that everyone who comes across you is going to follow that pattern. But that isn't realistic and the more aware we are of the status of potential fans, the easier it is to build and scale our fanbase. This is the fan pyramid: Most of our social media content revolves around creating for the top two tiers. An example of this is: "my new single is out, go and stream it" Whilst Tier 4 would find value in the content, Tier 1 wouldn't engage and this hurts your algorithm by slashing your engagement rate and your content reach will be hindered. This is one of key reasons why your content doesn't get pushed out further - new people aren't finding value because they're not in story yet. Before telling people to go to Spotify on your next post, reorient your content towards the bottom two tiers for 80% of posts. With everything you post, ask yourself the following question: "Will someone who has never seen me before understand, watch and engage?" The key to growing online is context. If someone sees you and doesn't understand the context instantly, they will swipe away and your reach will get throttled. Here are content examples you can use today: The Introduction Post - Film a clip of you performing to a song and either introduce yourself before you do it or include it in text. We tend to underestimate how powerful just introducing yourself is. The Cover Song/Duet - Cover 30 seconds of a song. The important aspect to remember with cover songs is that you want to do it differently to the original in a creative way. Show Someone Your Song On Video - The more genuine emotion in your content, the more reach you'll get. This is because people feel the narrative and heightens their connection. The Best Song Written - When people focus their energy, they want to focus it on the 'best'. So create a piece of content where you're excited that you've written your best song. The Negative Comment - As humans, we are sadly drawn to negativity. Utilise this to your advantage - do a video reply to a negative comment. Remember to introduce yourself. The Genre Flip - The 'what if' Ariana Grande was metal? Take something unexpected and subvert it. This will get attention as potential new fans will understand the context. If someone likes you, they will go to Spotify. But posting all the time to visit Spotify isn't going to grow lifelong fans. The key question next time you post content is... "Will someone who has never seen me before understand, watch and engage?"
