This is why you're failing

A pretty different email today. And an honest one (I always pride myself on being honest but this one might be a little bit more honest lol). The reason why you're failing is... You're trying too hard. And here's why.... I was thinking recently, why is it that some artists succeed and some artists fail. And I was scrolling online and found this about Navy SEAL training (bear with me, this does make sense). One thing they're taught early on is The Backwards Law (how to get what you want by letting go). In their training, there's something they do called Drown Proofing. The instructors tie your hands and feet... And throw you into a 9 ft pool. The only object is to survive for 5 minutes.  Some panic and need to get lifted out. But many pass because they know the secret to success... The secret is, the more you try to keep your head above the water, the more likely you are to sink. This means in a physical sense, if you have your hands and feet tied, it's impossible to stay afloat for 5 minutes. The more you panic, the more oxygen you burn too. The paradox is brutal, the more you try to live, the less likely you are to stay alive. What you want to do is completely relax and let yourself sink. When you reach the bottom, kick yourself back up to get air and repeat. Struggling just means you'll fail. This story perfectly summarizes The Backwards Law. With MORE Effort Means LESS Reward Crazy right? An example with athletes.... You can try harder physically to become better and usually in a physical sense, this works. But when you push your brain on the mental side when the pressure is on, usually you'll lose.  Coaches have said before "the best players I've seen don't care as much when they compete" It means they're LESS worried about failure or the outcome and just go and DO IT. If they're caring less, they can risk more and play to their potential rather than letting their mind hinder them in overthinking. So what does this mean for you and your music? CARE LESS. The more you care, the more you'll talk yourself out of thinking the song you wrote was good. The more you care, the less you'll post content because you will be worried about what people think. And the more you care, the more you'll panic that you're not where you need to be and won't then do anything at all because you'll be worried about messing it up. This ties in perfectly with the FAILURE PARADOX... The more you are afraid of failing, the more likely you are to fail. So today.... If you're worried about putting your music out there, DO IT ANYWAY Most people won't even notice and that's ok. And if they did, they've moved on with their day in 5 minutes. Give less f*cks and you'll achieve more. I don't really care about putting a call to action at the bottom of this email, the message in this is way more important.
