Lately, I've been spending a lot of time in Facebook groups reading about email marketing. For the last two decades, I've constantly preached that it's vital to have an email list for your online business to grow and succeed. You can lose all your social media properties, but no one can take away your email list. I was in one particular group and a bunch of people were complaining about low open rates on their email sends. They were looking for "hacks" and "tactics" to raise their email open rates. Yes, there are certain criteria to follow when composing an email... but a lot of people were replying with band-aid solutions. One person chimed in with something so simple and obvious... give value to your readers day in and day out. And you won't have an open rate problem anymore. You need to cultivate your list to a point that when your readers see your name in the "From" field... that's the trigger for them to open the email. Yes, I'm not saying that's an easy task, but when you provide value, readers will want to consume your emails. And what you definitely don't want to be is boring in your emails. All of us have unique experiences and perspectives on life that can help others. Inject your own personality into your emails (don't try to copy someone else) and your readers will start to radiate towards you. When I started my first email list back in 1998, I struggled to write what I thought needed to be the perfect email. It's much easier for me to write emails today, even though I still think they could be better. We're all self-critics. ;) You may lack the confidence or think you can't help people, but nothing could be further from the truth. Look at comedians like Jim Carrey, who built his fortune by simply making people laugh (he started when he was dead broke). [Turn On Images] He didn't teach people how to make money or how to acquire skills. He just wants to make people laugh. People have no issue paying to watch his movies because the dopamine release they get from laughing is worth way more than the cost of the movie ticket. And you don't always have to be selling in your emails to provide value. You could provide "secondary value" in the same email in the form of a helpful tip or even something that makes your reader chuckle. Don't underestimate your own ability to change the world one reader at a time. I've received countless emails in the past from readers telling me how one simple tip in one of my emails helped them. I hope this email was helpful (feel free to reply with your comments). Talk soon, [Turn On Images] Gauher Chaudhry P.S. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
