I grew up in Squirrel Hill, a small neighborhood of Pittsburgh. When I was a high school freshman, my brother Anthony was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. Insurance companies called it a pre-existing condition, and refused him coverage. The bills piled up, even after he died at the age of 20. After returning from Vietnam, my dad turned to drugs and ended up in jail, leaving my mother and me to keep our family business going. I took any job I could get to make ends meet and put myself through college. But my story isn’t unique. We’ve all had our struggles. From losing my brother, to seeing my dad behind bars due to addiction, I’ve seen how our current political and justice systems fail so many people.
