When I was a high school freshman, my brother Anthony was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. Insurance companies called it a pre-existing condition, and refused him coverage. The bills piled up, even after he died at the age of 20. After returning from Vietnam, my dad turned to drugs and ended up in jail, leaving my mother and me to keep our family business going. To put myself through law school and make ends meet, I took any job I could get. But I know my story isn’t unique. Every single one of us has had our struggles. From losing my brother, to seeing my dad behind bars due to addiction, I understand first-hand how our political system has failed too many Pennsylvanians.
