I learned early on what it meant to be a fighter, to stand up for others when they couldn't stand up for themselves. As a kid, my brother Anthony was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. Insurance companies called it a pre-existing condition, and refused him coverage. At the time, my dad was behind bars all because he struggled with opioid addiction. Our bills piled up, and we even had to take out loans for my brother’s funeral when he passed away at the age of 20. All because of what health insurance companies were capable of doing to people. But my story isn’t unique. We’ve all had our struggles. From losing my brother, to seeing my dad behind bars due to addiction, I’ve seen how our current political and justice systems fail so many people.
