While unemployment is at an all-time low, Americans are continuing to combat generational rates of inflation. This matters because studies have found that a number of people that experience housing insecurity are the working poor. In America, having a job isn’t enough to stop you from experiencing homelessness. Unemployment, underemployment, and low wages relative to rent are frequent causes of homelessness and burden millions of families with the risk of becoming homeless. At the same time, individuals experiencing homelessness face obstacles to finding and maintaining employment. There’s a solution. Connecting people experiencing or at risk of homelessness with job training and placement programs is critical to ensure they have the tools they need for long-term stability and success. Facilitating access to work supports like childcare subsidies and transportation assistance can help increase the likelihood that individuals will be able to retain employment. A job with a living wage and adequate social service programs can help eradicate homelessness, and legislation that tackles this head-on has already been introduced in previous legislatures. The Jobs for All Act would target employment and training resources to the unhoused and equip communities to tackle this solvable issue, would give the unhoused an opportunity to get paid job training, reduce discrimination against the disabled, historically marginalized communities, and women, and restore low-income citizens to dignity through employment.
