Following the Supreme Court’s historic affirmance of the Voting Rights Act in the case Allen v. Milligan, fair maps allies were permitted to continue to fight against similarly discriminatory maps in Louisiana. A LOT has happened since then, so here’s a quick rundown: FIRST: First, fair maps advocates challenged Louisiana's discriminatory congressional map – and won! The court tossed out the map for violating Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. THEN: The Louisiana legislature answered our call to create two Black opportunity districts in the state – a historic win for equal representation. NOW: Anti-democratic forces who remain set on reversing this progress filed a baseless lawsuit attempting to get rid of the new Black opportunity district. Advocates for fair maps have already sprung into action to intervene in this case, pointing to the precedent set in last summer’s Supreme Court decision — and it’s on us to get their backs to ensure both Black opportunity districts remain intact.
