FIRST: After the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Alabama’s congressional map for illegally diluting the power of Black voters, Alabama lawmakers ignored the Court’s mandate to enact a new, fair map. Instead, lawmakers approved a second map that also discriminated against Black voters. THEN: The Court reaffirmed its decision and allowed a special master to draw a new map with two opportunity districts where Black Alabamans can elect the candidate of their choice. BUT NOW: GOP lawmakers in Georgia have taken a page out of Alabama’s book. After a court ruled that Georgia’s maps violated the Voting Rights Act, Republicans voted to enact a new set of maps that continue to discriminate against Black voters.
