NPR:
âSupreme Court rejects Alabama's defiance in voting caseâ First, over the summer, the Supreme Court struck down Alabamaâs congressional map for violating the Voting Rights Act and ordered lawmakers to draw a new map that fairly represented Black voters. Then, despite these clear instructions, Alabama Republicans openly refused to comply with the Supreme Courtâs ruling and instead submitted a second map that still violated the VRA. But the federal courts didnât waver. Instead, a federal district court again rejected Alabamaâs latest discriminatory map, and ordered a special master to draw new, fair districts. Then, the Supreme Court denied Alabama Republicansâ subsequent request to skirt their responsibility to draw a fair map. And just this week, that same federal district court ordered the special masterâs fair map to be used for the upcoming 2024 election. Now, this decision could have ramifications for fair maps across the country. In fact, so many maps could be redrawn that, according to FiveThirtyEight, âthis decision could be the difference between Republican and Democratic control of the House.â [The NDRC is fighting to end gerrymandering â and we wonât rest until weâve secured fair maps in every state.
