FROM: John Bisognano, NDRC President
DATE: August 30, 2023
RE: State of Democracy â what you need to know about upcoming elections Team, As we approach the end of August, itâs clear that 2024 will be here before we know it. Thatâs why Iâm reaching out to update top grassroots supporters like you about the state of the NDRCâs work and what it means for upcoming elections. If you donât have time to read the full memo right now but would still like to support the NDRCâs democracy-saving work, you can do so by clicking [here](. Our Fight for Fair Maps Helped Secure a Level Playing Field in 2022 - Thanks to our fight for fair maps, last yearâs elections took place on one of the fairest redistricting landscapes in decades.
- We also helped Democrats win critical legislative races nationwide. According to FiveThirtyEight, âFor the first time in years, more Americans [now] live in a state fully controlled by Democrats than in one fully controlled by Republicans.â [Help win more victories for democracy: Donate to the NDRC >>]( We Have an Opportunity to Fight for Fairer Maps Ahead of 2024 - In June, the Supreme Court affirmed the striking down of Alabamaâs discriminatory congressional map and ordered lawmakers to draw a fair map before next Novemberâs election. The decision could also impact more maps in states across the South.
- So many states could redraw their maps that, according to FiveThirtyEight, âthis decision could be the difference between Republican and Democratic control of the House.â [Help fight for fair maps in 2024: Donate to the NDRC >>]( But Republicans are Still Desperate to Hold on to Unearned Power - Despite the huge victory for fair redistricting at the Supreme Court, Republicans are determined to protect their gerrymandered maps.
- Rather than complying with the Courtâs clear instructions, Alabama lawmakers defied the Courtâs order by voting to enact another gerrymandered map.
- If left unchecked, Republicans across the country could use obstructionist tactics like this to keep manipulated maps in place in 2024. [Help stop GOP gerrymandering: Donate to the NDRC >>]( The Current Landscape Leaves Us With Two Options 1. We can do nothing while Republicans keep working to manipulate maps and undermine our democracy. Years from now, weâll look back on 2022 as the high watermark for fair maps. 2. We can use all the tools at our disposal to make sure the maps in 2024 are even fairer. Years from now, weâll look back and know we did everything we could to strengthen our democracy. [Team, our team at the NDRC is picking option two. Weâre going to do everything we can to fight for the fairest maps possible in 2024.
