But then, a former judge warned that the Courtâs ruling would not be enough to ensure that Alabamaâs new maps will fairly represent Black voters. He said, âI have absolutely no faith that the Alabama Legislature is going to do the right thing. It never has.â Now, his prediction has already come true: Instead of complying with the Court's order, Alabama Republicans instead passed a second map that also violates the VRA. [{NAME}, now is not the time to take a victory lap. Instead, we must continue fighting for fair maps â not just in Alabama, but all across the country. [Another amount]( This isnât just about Alabama, {NAME}. According to experts, the recent SCOTUS ruling could lead to more states like Georgia, Louisiana, and others being required to redraw their racially-discriminatory maps before the next election. But if GOP lawmakers run out the clock, they could keep manipulated maps in place! Last year, courts struck down the Ohio legislatureâs manipulated maps. But rather than draw new, fair maps, Republicans instead resubmitted gerrymandered maps seven more times. Left unchecked, we can count on Republicans in states like Alabama and Louisiana to employ a similar strategy. [Thatâs why the NDRC is not backing down â instead, weâll keep fighting until weâve secured fair maps in every corner of the country. Holder hit the nail on the head when he said âRepublicans are making it clear that they will do whatever it takes â even if it means eroding our federalist system as we know it â to circumvent the will of the people so they can lock in their own power.â [Here at the NDRC, weâre willing to do whatever it takes to strengthen our democracy and defend it from those who seek to weaken it, and our work is made possible by this grassroots team.
