A desperate mess. To begin with, Kevin McCarthy was barely even able to muster the support to become speaker. He only prevailed after 15 grueling votes – but not before Republicans nearly devolved into a fistfight on the House floor. Once he finally won the gavel, McCarthy awarded Marjorie Taylor Greene – a MAGA extremist who spread QAnon conspiracy theories and expressed sympathy for insurrectionists – with a seat on the Homeland Security Committee. Yes, really. Then, as one of their first matters of business, MAGA Republicans passed not one, but two measures restricting abortion access nationwide, despite a majority of Americans clearly opposing this extreme act. And now, Republicans are threatening to plunge the economy into chaos unless Congress agrees to slash Social Security and Medicare, even though the vast majority of Americans support these programs. How did extremist leaders who advocate policies most Americans vehemently oppose manage to take control of the House majority? The answer is one word: Gerrymandering. [By manipulating maps, Republicans can all but guarantee that they’ll win majority power, even if they only win a minority of votes!
