Today, we’re launching our “Adopt a State” program that will allow you to take a closer look at one (or more!) of our priority states in this 2024 election. When you adopt a state to focus on, you’ll receive important updates from our priority races in that state. (And, if you pair your pick with a donation today, you’ll get a custom background for your phone and to share with friends — all while supporting Democracy Defenders across the country.) In 2024, we are broadly working to 1) elect Democratic candidates for governor and state legislatures; 2) combat partisan efforts to reduce the independence of State Supreme Courts and support fair-minded State Supreme Court justices; and 3) enact redistricting reform ballot measures and defend against anti-Democratic initiatives. [Take a closer look at our 2024 priority states below, and when you’re ready, click here to adopt a state to focus on.]( ARIZONA In Arizona, we’re focused on the state legislature. Right now, Republicans hold just a two-seat majority in both the state House and Senate. If we can help get out the vote and win a majority in both chambers, we can strengthen the state’s redistricting process. We are so close. [Join Team Arizona]( GEORGIA We’re supporting the Georgia House of Representatives, {NAME}, where MAGA Republicans have enacted extreme voter suppression laws that target communities of color with despicable precision. We’ve endorsed twenty-seven state legislature candidates as Democracy Defenders. There are so many extraordinary candidates for you to learn more about. [Join Team Georgia]( MICHIGAN You’ve heard about this recently from our team — the Supreme Court race here is incredibly important. The Republicans nominated an extreme MAGA Republican for one of the seats. He perpetuates the “Big Lie” and actually attended a “Stop the Steal” rally at the Michigan State Capitol on January 6, 2021. Luckily there are two phenomenal candidates who’ve stepped up to preserve our fundamental rights. We’ve endorsed Justice Kyra Harris Bolden and Kimberly Ann Thomas as Democracy Defenders — two tested, proven legal professionals who are pro-democracy, pro-voting rights, and pro-freedom. [Join Team Michigan]( MINNESOTA In 2022, just 321 votes flipped control of the State Senate to a one-seat Democratic majority and created a blue trifecta with the State House and governorship. While Democrats have the majority in the legislature right now, the Minnesota State House is on the line this November. The legislature here has been able to make great gains on paid and medical leave, workplace protections, voting rights, gun safety and more — we need to make sure pro-democracy leaders stay in office. [Join Team Minnesota]( MONTANA Two of the seven Montana Supreme Court seats are up in November. The state’s highest court has been pushing back on unconstitutional laws — so conservatives are aggressively working to secure these seats. But with State Supreme Courts being asked to rule on abortion, gerrymandering, voting rights, and climate change, it’s critically important that we help elect justices who will protect our fundamental rights. [Join Team Montana]( NEW HAMPSHIRE In New Hampshire, we’re watching the state legislature as well as the Governor’s race. Right now Republicans hold both the Senate and the House — but they have to defend tiny majorities. The House is considered a toss-up and the Senate is within reach. Mid-cycle congressional redistricting is permitted in this state, so the GOP could choose to rewrite their maps at any given moment. Democrats need to win the legislature to put that possibility of mid-cycle GOP gerrymandering to rest. And New Hampshire is the one state in New England that does not have abortion protections on the books. We’ve got to elect leaders who will help enshrine and protect our freedoms. [Join Team New Hampshire]( NORTH CAROLINA We endorsed Justice Allison Riggs for the North Carolina Supreme Court because she has proven to be a fair-minded and independent voice on the court. She is a tenacious civil rights attorney who has been a champion of every American’s fundamental rights, including voting rights. Her opponent, Jefferson Griffith, has already shown he would push the North Carolina Supreme Court even further to the extreme and supports egregious gerrymanders. He joined a deeply controversial ruling that would have established a precedent for so-called personhood laws in North Carolina, which have resulted in restrictions to abortion access and IVF bans in other states. North Carolinians deserve a leader like Justice Allison Riggs to defend their freedoms. [Join Team North Carolina]( OHIO There’s a lot at stake in Ohio this year. In July, we endorsed three Supreme Court candidates as Democracy Defenders. Justice Michael P. Donnelly, Justice Melody Stewart, and Judge Lisa Forbes are fair maps champions who will protect fundamental rights, adhere to legal and judicial norms, and uphold the rule of law for all Ohioans. [Join Team Ohio]( PENNSYLVANIA The Pennsylvania legislature is another huge opportunity. It’s currently the only state in the country with a divided legislature (where Democrats hold one legislative chamber and Republicans hold the other), after Democrats flipped the House in 2022. Earlier this year, States United Action reported that nearly 1 in 3 members of the Pennsylvania House are election deniers. And when the brave first responders who defended our capitol on January 6th visited the Pennsylvania House, several Republicans booed and walked out. Pennsylvanians deserve better than that. We’ve endorsed thirty-three state legislative candidates as Democracy Defenders — if we flip the Senate AND hold the House, another Democratic trifecta will give us a route to redistricting reform. [Join Team Pennsylvania]( TEXAS In Texas, State Supreme Court justices are elected in partisan elections. Right now, all nine of them are Republicans — Democrats haven’t been elected to the court since the late 1990s. We’ve got to gain some ground here ahead of the next redistricting fight, and there are three court seats up. It’s going to be a tough road, but we can do it with your support. [Join Team Texas]( WISCONSIN Earlier this year, this movement won fair maps for Wisconsin. The Republican-drawn, gerrymandered legislative maps were struck down in court. Now we have a chance to elect a legislature that reflects the will of the people. For decades, Wisconsin has seen some of the most brazen attempts to manipulate maps for Republicans who have been desperate to hold on to power in the legislature. Their reign has been nothing short of disastrous for democracy in the state. But now we have a real chance at flipping the State Assembly and making gains in the State Senate — our best shot in a generation. [Join Team Wisconsin]( Think about election night: Won’t it be exciting if you see results come in from one of these races, and you know the details of that race and understand exactly what was at stake? Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
