That’s the only way we can describe yesterday’s Supreme Court decision to reverse a lower court order which had invalidated a “stark racial gerrymander” in Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP. It’s yet another stain on the Roberts Court’s shameful legacy of rolling back the voting rights of American citizens. In its ruling, the Supreme Court’s conservative majority inappropriately displaced the district court’s diligent factual findings in order to meet its own desired outcome. We are no strangers to setbacks handed down from ideological courts. But our work isn’t defined by those setbacks — it’s defined by how we respond.
