{NAME} -- By now you've probably heard that Donald Trump wants your Social Security number. I'm serious. Last week his voter suppression commission, led by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, sent a letter to every Secretary of State in the nation demanding they hand over an electronic file containing the name, address, date of birth, voting history, and yes, the Social Security number of every registered voter in the country. After members of the public flooded their Secretaries of State with angry calls, 45 of the 50 have refused to hand over at least some of the data. Still, this was a clear effort to try and launch the commission's true purpose: a massive purge of the voter rolls in order to prevent Democratic victories while also re-imposing Jim Crow in our elections. Kobach's letter got a lot of attention, but it's far from the only threat from the Trump Administration to your right to vote. Right now Trump, Kobach, Mike Pence, Jeff Sessions, and Republicans across the country are working hard on their grand plan to suppress the vote -- especially votes from people of color. We've got to stop them. [Voting rights were already being eroded before Trump took office. Now he plans to step up the attack. We must fight back. Sign DFA's petition and tell the New York Secretary of State: Do not comply with Trump's voter suppression efforts. Protect everyone's right to vote!]( Republicans have long known that suppressing the vote is key to their ability to stay in power. They make false claims about voter fraud in order to pass laws like voter ID, end early voting, and purge the voter rolls. These laws also serve another key Republican goal: reinforcing white supremacy and rebuilding the legal architecture of Jim Crow. It's no coincidence that voter suppression laws hurt people of color the most -- that's the entire point. Republicans have won control of the federal government and most state governments, but only by very narrow margins. They know, just as DFA members know, that if we can mobilize people of color, young voters, infrequent voters, and everyone who shares our progressive values, that we can reverse most of those losses and elect good Democrats. That's why Trump and Pence started this terrible commission and put Kris Kobach, a noted expert at voter suppression, in charge of it. Their goal: convince America that voter fraud is a widespread problem (it's practically non-existent) and use that to push through another mass voter purge. Although last week's Kobach letter has now been widely rejected, at the same time the Department of Justice sent out a letter of its own that may be more alarming. The DOJ is pressing Secretaries of State to report on their efforts to purge voter rolls. They hope to find evidence this isn't being done -- and begin a brutal new round of voter suppression. We know that Republicans will not stop finding ways to take away the right to vote. That's why we need our Secretaries of State to fight back. Every last one of them, Republican or Democrat, must reject these efforts. Will you help? [Sign DFA's petition right now and tell the New York Secretary of State: Do not comply with Trump's voter suppression efforts.
