Kevin McCarthy refused to say if Social Security and Medicare cuts would be tied to debt-limit negotiations, a move that would threaten to shut down the government. Steve Scalise, the number two House Republican, defended their plans for Medicare and Social Security on Fox News, including raising the retirement age and higher premiums for health coverage.
