Hi {NAME}, it’s Danny Glover. In March, I received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award because I have spent my life fighting for justice and human rights. My journey began in the San Francisco Bay Area where I have continued to support progressive, grassroots candidates. I’m writing today to ask for your support for one of them. [We need change in our criminal justice system and that is why I am asking you to join me and DFA in supporting Pamela Price for District Attorney of Alameda County.]( [Donate]( This is a very important race - the District Attorney has not been an open seat since 1939! For eighty-three years, democracy has fallen silent in Alameda County when it comes to who is administering justice. Alameda County lays claim to being “the bluest county in the bluest state,” except when it comes to its justice system. I am proud to support Pamela and encourage you to join me because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the people of Alameda County to reclaim their justice system. They deserve a District Attorney who will listen to the will of the voters and protect public safety to build public trust. Did you know that in Alameda County: - [A two-year study by the ACLU of Northern California and the Urban Peace Movement]( found that the policies and practices of the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office led to overcriminalization, needlessly cost the County money and promoted mass incarceration, with a devastating impact on Black and Brown communities. - In March 2021, the Alameda County District Attorney’s office was accused of a decade of a ["troubling and extensive pattern of misconduct"?]( Attorneys also alleged that DA O’Malley “ignores misconduct in the ranks and in fact covers up that misconduct and, frankly, rewards it.” - [According to the ACLU "Meet Your DA" survey]( DA O’Malley has remained neutral or opposed criminal justice reforms supported by close to 80% of Alameda County constituents, such as: eliminating money bail, eliminating sentencing enhancements, and not charging minors as adults. Pamela is the only woman and currently elected Democrat in the race. She is prepared to make history as the first African-American woman to ever lead the DA's office. Her vision includes imposing prohibitions on seeking the death penalty and charging youth as adults, ending all cooperation with ICE, replacing the unfair money bail system, and creating more effective pathways for accountability for veterans, young people, seniors, and people struggling with economic and housing insecurity and those suffering from serious mental illness and/or drug addiction. The election is on June 7th. [Learn more about Pamela’s platform and plans for Alameda County.]( Let me tell you about my friend Pamela… Pamela is an award-winning civil rights attorney who has spent her 40-year career fighting for human rights and standing in the gap for everyday people against sex, race, and gender discrimination and harassment. Her journey to justice began as a civil rights activist who was arrested at 13 years old in a civil rights demonstration. From there, she survived the Ohio juvenile justice and foster care system and made it to Yale University. At Yale, she became the lead plaintiff in the groundbreaking Title IX case - Alexander (Price) v. Yale - which established that sexual harassment in education is illegal. Pamela’s case taught her that lawyers can be advocates for change and support movements for human rights, so she left New Haven with her BA in Political Science and came to California to attend UC Berkeley Law School. In 2002, a decade after opening her own law firm, she successfully argued in the United States Supreme Court in Amtrak v. Morgan, receiving a 5-4 decision with the majority opinion written by Clarence Thomas. This case established the “continuing violation” doctrine that still applies to all discrimination cases brought under federal law in the United States. Currently, Pamela has 13 published opinions and has been named a Northern California Super Lawyer every year since 2004. Now, Pamela wants to use her years of experience and expertise to bring accountability, transparency, equity, and compassion to the District Attorney’s office in Alameda County. [I encourage you to learn more about Pamela’s incredible story and high-profile law career.]( What can we do to help Pamela win in these final days of her campaign? [Contribute!]( Pamela is a corporate-free candidate. In her 2018 race for this seat, Police and Sheriff associations from across the state of California, and Alameda County Sheriff Greg Ahern, spent over $1 million dollars on a smear campaign against her! The money is flowing in against her again. [Please donate to Pamela here!]( [Volunteer!]( Pamela is running a grassroots campaign! Join her team to make phone calls to voters, share social media posts, or knock on doors in any and every neighborhood in Alameda County. Spread the Word! Voters in Alameda County and across the state of California are receiving their ballots now! What happens in the District Attorney’s race in Alameda County will impact counties across this state by showing them what is possible for protecting public safety and building public trust.
