{NAME} -- Yesterday, Donald Trump made America less safe by taking reckless military action in the Syrian Civil War. Without consulting Congress or presenting any discernable plan for how we're going to achieve success, the actions Trump is taking are extremely dangerous. He has put lives at risk -- American, Syrian, and more. He also violated the Constitution and put our democracy at risk. California Representative Ted Lieu put it well in his statement today: "President Bashar al-Assad's latest attack on his own people with chemical weapons was heinous and heartbreaking. The U.S. Constitution, however, does not allow the President to engage in acts of war without authorization from Congress. Having served on active duty as a JAG, I am well aware of the legal authorities for the use of military force. President Trump's unilateral decision to launch 59 Tomahawk missiles at another country’s military -- which had not attacked the U.S. -- was unconstitutional." Bashar Assad's attack on civilians, including children, using sarin gas is horrifying. That does not justify an unconstitutional, illegal, and risky act of war. Congress must immediately act to rein in Trump before he strikes again. [Sign the petition: Tell Congress to step in and stop Trump's illegal actions in Syria.]( The Constitution is clear: Only Congress can authorize the use of military force. Congress has not given any such authorization to attack Assad or his regime. If Trump thinks the chemical weapons attack in Syria justifies such an attack, the Constitution requires that he make his case to Congress -- and await their authorization. Already the news is full of reports and rumors about the aftermath of last night's missile attack. Syria is furious. Russia's reaction is unclear. And the attack itself doesn't appear to have done much damage, opening the door to further acts of aggression. If Congress doesn't act now, the situation could spiral out of control. Donald Trump can't even make a phone call to an ally without screwing it up. Congress needs to do its job, exercise real oversight, and make sure Donald Trump doesn't start World War III. [Sign the petition: Congress must step in and authorize any military action in Syria.]( Thank you for helping stop Trump's reckless warmongering. - Charles Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director Democracy for America [DONATE]( Paid for by Democracy for America, and not authorized by any candidate.
