{NAME}, More than 45 million Americans are straddled with student debt. In total, they owe over $1.67 trillion in outstanding student loan debt. It shouldnât be this way and it doesnât have to be. The Biden administration has the authority to cancel student debt, and right now the pressure is building for them to do it! This amount of debt is extreme and a new phenomenon. It's directly tied to the fact that the cost of attending a public college or university has increased 350% since 1980. We shouldnât be punishing people for seeking higher education. Education should be available and accessible to all -- no matter your race, gender, zip code, or income. Thatâs why we're asking you to join Elizabeth Warren, other Democracy for America members, and now an additional 415 organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, the American Psychological Association, and the Consumer Federation of America in calling on President Biden to cancel student debt. The more support we have, the more likely it will become a reality. For too long higher education has been inaccessible and unattainable for working families, especially for Black and brown communities, thus deepening economic and racial inequality. We set students up to fail by punishing them with crushing student loans that make it nearly impossible to afford housing, groceries, or medical bills. We can cancel student debt if we build a movement of everyday people working together to make it a reality.
