{NAME} -- Senator Kamala Harris just called for the resignation of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen over the horrendous treatment of immigrant children and families by ICE -- and Nielsen's refusal to stop it. [Will you have Sen. Harris's back by signing Democracy for America's petition telling Secretary Nielsen to resign NOW?]( Today, through harrowing, newly-released images, the whole world is witnessing the outrageous and cruel impact of Donald Trump's new "zero tolerance" immigration policy. This horrifying family separation policy is opposed by 67% of Americans, according to a new CNN poll -- and it could be revoked by Trump and Secretary Nielsen at literally any time. But instead of doing the morally right thing by choosing to end the routine separation of immigrant families, this morning Secretary Nielsen tripled down on the policy. She refused to apologize for the harm she's causing to immigrant children and families, claiming that "illegal actions have and must have consequences." Just days ago, CNN reported that nearly 2,000 children had been separated from their parents in just a little over one month -- and under Trump and Nielsen's new policy, the rate of separations will only go up. Trump's child detention facilities are becoming overwhelmed and overcrowded, and the stress and heartbreak of separation has already led one immigrant parent to commit suicide while in US custody. As Sen. Harris said in her statement today, our government should be in the business of keeping families together, NOT tearing them apart -- and that won't change as long as Secretary Nielsen is in charge of DHS. [Stand with Kamala Harris and sign DFA's petition demanding that Secretary Nielsen step down immediately.]( Thanks for fighting back against this administration's inhumane actions. - Karli Karli Wallace Thompson, Senior Digital Manager Democracy for America [DONATE]( Paid for by Democracy for America, and not authorized by any candidate.
