School should be a place for children to relax, play, and learn. It should not be a militarized bunker where adults are shooting at each other.
But that's what Donald Trump and the NRA want to do in response to the gun massacre in Parkland, Florida. As part of their effort to derail the movement for real gun reforms, including a ban on assault weapons, Trump and the NRA are calling for teachers to be armed and for more police to be sent into our schools.
As a parent, I'm horrified at the thought of my child, or any other child, having to experience that at school. But this is what happens when we fail to demand our elected leaders get these dangerous guns off our streets -- we turn schools into bunkers and treat children like cannon fodder.
Trump and NRA Republicans want us to talk about arming teachers rather than banning assault weapons. That's why Democracy for America is fighting back by supporting progressive Democrats who will not rest until NRA Republicans are defeated and AR-15s are taken off the streets.Â
