It's official: I'm the Democratic nominee to take on Ted Cruz

My mom was a public school teacher and sometimes worked two jobs to make ends meet. Thanks to my family and a strong support system of teachers, coaches, and the good folks at the YMCA, I earned a full-ride football scholarship to Baylor University and then went on to play in the NFL. But playing football was never my only dream – from a young age I knew I wanted to help people. So I became a civil rights attorney to defend what I believe is our most fundamental right: the right to vote. I proudly served in President Obama’s administration before I came home to Dallas, where my wife, Aly, and I are now raising our family. I ran for Congress in 2018 because I wanted more kids in North Texas to have the opportunity to achieve their version of the American dream. I also saw that our democracy was in peril and wanted to be part of protecting it. No one gave me a chance in that race, but I beat the odds to defeat an 11-term Republican incumbent.
