{NAME}, Today, with so much facing our country and our world, President Biden will give his State of the Union address to Congress to review our successes – from passing the Build Back Better bill to expanding the child tax credit – and challenges – like the threat on our democracy from the far-right – of the past year. Before President Biden takes the stage, I want to send my own update, a State of the States review of where we are in our fight to elect legislators who uphold our democracy, protect our fundamental rights, and work with local leaders to bring our communities into the 21-st century. Right now, we are preparing to support over 30 races for lieutenant governor across the country. The lieutenant governor’s role is an important one – take it from someone who knows. We don’t just sit around and wait for the governor to become absent from office, we’re out in our communities, listening to constituents, and advocating for the legislation we want to see passed. Building a strong coalition of Democratic lieutenant governors is not just important for building the Democratic bench of the next generation of leaders, it’s critically important to stop the attacks on our rights and our democracy at the state level. In Florida, the “don’t say gay” bill has moved out of committee and goes up for a vote in the State Senate, a dangerous piece of legislation that will put LGBTQ+ youth into dangerous situations, forcing teachers to out them to their families regardless of what their home life looks like. Or look at Texas and Georgia which are passing dangerous anti-democratic bills to limit access to the ballot box, particularly in Black and brown communities. Should the Supreme Court strike down Roe v. Wade, access to reproductive care will fall to the states, providing wildly different services to their residents. In 2022, the state of the states is in flux. We are still grappling with lawmakers who want to cheat their way into office by picking who can and can’t vote and those who would roll back civil liberties. This November, it’s our chance to make a substantial difference in the lives of people in states like Texas, Florida, and Georgia by electing strong Democrats to statewide office. Thanks for being with us in our work, Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long Chair, Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association PS: If you can, [we need as many grassroots donations as possible to support our work. Will you chip in $20.22 to support down-ballot Democrats?]( --------------------------------------------------------------- [Facebook]( [Twitter]( The Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association (DLGA) is the only organization solely focused on electing Democratic lieutenant governors and candidates each year. We ARE the Democratic bench: The DLGA supports the most diverse group of statewide elected officials in the country. We need your help to elect more Democratic lieutenant governors and take back state houses from coast to coast!
