The families who hug loved ones goodbye as their sons, daughters, fathers, and mothers answer the call of duty and sacrifice everything to protect our way of life. The families who are working double shifts through the holiday week so they can put food on the table or keep the air conditioning running during the summer. And the families who, just like the founders of our nation, risk their lives coming to our land in search of freedom and a brighter future for themselves and their children. Let today remind us that despite our differences, we all share the uniquely American values at the core of our democracy: fairness, justice, civility, and equal opportunity for all. Let it remind us that what makes America so special is not her might, but rather her founding commitment to make right the master of might -- to ensure that no one is above the law. And as we celebrate our independence, let us turn our collective gaze to the Statue of Liberty and reflect on what America has long represented to the world since its birth. For there, the plaque reads to the world: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” These values have stayed with us since the founding of our country more than two centuries ago, and every day, I pledge to work to uphold them -- for my family and for yours. I look forward to marching side-by-side with members of our community today as we celebrate our patriotism and our love for everything America represents. Have a safe holiday, {NAME}.
