This is extremely concerning, {NAME}. President Trump declared a “national emergency” to build his border wall and save face on his broken campaign promise, but the real crisis here is that his plan is a clear violation of the separation of powers that protect our democracy from authoritarianism. /rLjEbBf3dxMv02TZvtzbuaykfDoP4AfB4-y2bzBzNRs=?refcode=em_pet_2019.02.20_b1_ad_all&amount=25&recurring=auto This is extremely concerning, {NAME}. President Trump declared a “national emergency” to build his border wall and save face on his broken campaign promise, but the real crisis here is that his plan is a clear violation of the separation of powers that protect our democracy from authoritarianism. Not only is the president ignoring the will of the people -- the majority of whom disagree with this decision -- but he’s completely disregarding the powers that the U.S. Constitution clearly gives to Congress in Article I. {NAME}, this is just the latest assault on our checks and balances. This administration has already tried to undermine the free press, judges, and our law enforcement and intelligence communities. I’m doing everything in my power to defend the guardrails of our democracy, but in times like these, it’s going to take all of us standing up to protect our democratic order and uphold our founding principles. [Add your name to our petition today to stand in opposition to this flagrant power grab. I’m hoping we can get 2,000 signatures by midnight tonight.](/T2FQJLnnSulkjG8E2IDYZw-wN2fZWTYZ2d9id6TqRsk=) [Add your name →](/T2FQJLnnSulkjG8E2IDYZw-wN2fZWTYZ2d9id6TqRsk=) National emergencies are reserved for legitimate crises, like wartime, public health crises, or natural disasters. It should be disturbing to all Americans that Trump is abusing his power to unilaterally enforce a policy that this past election showed us the majority of Americans are strongly against! There’s still time to restore integrity to our democracy, but it’s going to take everyone using their voice now, so we can get back to solving the real challenges families are facing here in upstate New York and around the country.
