Colorado is celebrating the official beginning of long-awaited gray wolf reintroduction! ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ [Defenders of Wildlife] “This is a historic moment that makes me proud to be a Coloradan. Living alongside wolves and other wildlife is part of life in the West, and we have the tools we need to successfully restore this piece of our natural heritage.” - Kaitie Schneider, Rockies and Plains Representative [Gray wolf in autumn woods © Carol Gray/iStock Photo] Defender, Colorado made history this week by reintroducing gray wolves to the state. On Monday, five healthy wolves left a trail of paw prints behind them as they ran into the wilds of Grand County, marking the official beginning of a reintroduction effort that has been decades in the making. This release follows a whirlwind week in which several anti-wolf groups launched two lawsuits to stop this critical wolf recovery initiative that will finally connect the wolf’s historic range down the spine of the Rockies. Defenders’ lawyers fought these lawsuits up to the last minute, and a judge ruled in our favor, allowing the reintroduction to move forward. Now just days later, wolves are on the ground in Colorado, exploring their new habitat. It’s possible that more wolves will join them in the coming weeks.
