Today is National Women's Equality Day, a day that commemorates 104 years of women having the right to vote. Last week, I became the first Latina nominee for Senate from Florida. As I reflect on the progress women have made in the U.S. since 1920, I keep coming back to this line from the majority decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, justifying why the right to abortion should be left to the states: "Our decision returns the issue of abortion to those legislative bodies, and it allows women on both sides of the abortion issue to seek to affect the legislative process by influencing public opinion, lobbying legislators, voting, and running for office. Women are not without electoral or political power." — Justice Samuel Alito What Alito doesn't mention is that women make up less than 30% of the House of Representatives and only a quarter of U.S. senators. He fails to consider how women are less likely to run for office and how, when they do, women are more likely to face negative attacks and have a harder time fundraising. And even once they're in office, bills introduced in Congress concerning "women's issues" are twice as likely to end in deadlock. Here's the real truth, {NAME}: Women are systematically excluded from political power, and excluded from equal representation. The overturning of Roe v. Wade and rolling back of reproductive rights in Florida and beyond proves that, since the majority of Americans disapprove of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. With extremist Republicans like Donald Trump, JD Vance, and Rick Scott threatening to push a nationwide ban on abortions as part of their Project 2025 agenda, it's crucial for pro-choice progressives to come together and stop them from taking control of the White House and Senate. That's why I'm running to defeat Rick Scott, who proudly backed DeSantis' abortion ban, co-sponsored the bill to enact a nationwide ban on abortions, and voted against both IVF and birth control protections. {NAME}: Like you, I've had enough.
