Itâs a good morning for good news. So weâve got some for you, if youâre not a Chinese company or Apple competitor that is...
Year of the Flops
China, normally a force to be reckoned with... not so much in U.S. markets this year. Beijing- based [Wanda Sports]( now holdâs 2019âs second-worst debut award. Who takes the crown you ask? Ruhnn Holding, a Chinese company that promotes e-commerce through online influencers, has fallen an impressive 70% since its $125 million April IPO.
Ten of the 16 Chinese companies that have gone public this year are trading below their IPO pricesâ 23 of the 87 Chinese companies that have gone public since 2016 are trading below their IPO prices. I must say, the odds are not in their favor and Chinaâs suspected slowing economy and U.S. China trade tensions sure do not help.
Alas, Chinese companies persist, and listing on U.S. markets still remains the most preferred method to access capital. And just incase U.S. markets continue to do them no favors, China launched a new [Nasdaq-style trading venue, STAR Market]( but that is a whole different conversation entirely.
Apple Just Being Apple
Speaking of forces to be reckoned with, Apple is still trying to take over the world and Iâm not convinced they wonât do it. [With the billion-dollar acquisition of Intelâs smartphone modem business]( itâs extremely likely they will begin to develop their own 5G modems for iPhones. Sayonara Qualcomm, itâs been real, but not really because you and Apple had quite the falling out.
Once the deal is complete, Apple will hold over 17,000 wireless technology patents. It seems as though they are staying true to their philosophy of end to end integration of all aspects of their products.
While weâre on the topic of cellular devices, [Sprint and T-Mobileâs merger]( has been approved by The Department of Justiceâ so long as they give new kid on the block, Dish, a helping hand. Of course they agreed, because why wouldnât you when 30% of the market share will soon be at your fingertips.
The Hero We Didnât Know We Needed
Amazon has been so good to us. Not only do they send us virtually whatever we want in just two days time with one annual fee, they basically force associated (and competing) companies to get with the programâ making online shopping a more pleasant experience overall.
[UPS has teamed up with big retailers to add 12,000 more pickup and drop off locations to their roster](. But thatâs not all folks. They will also be offering more efficient and affordable worldwide shipping options, seven day delivery options, and drumroll please... UPS just announced their new drone subsidiary UPS Flight Forward, Inc.
The 112 year old delivery company has been busy to say the very least and for good reason. Increased demand for UPS services drove better than expected quarterly profits. And if weâre about to have doorstep drone service, Iâd say thatâs a win for us all.
