Hugh's News Check out our latest video: Building Confidence in Trading! REDUNDANT SYSTEMS We take it for granted... we just assume that everything will work. Why wouldn't it? My computer, mouse, keyboard and internet connection have never failed me, right? Wrong. Just think of the millions of things that need to function to keep you up and running… electronic components, chips, radio transmissions, connections, software. It’s almost miraculous how we turn on our computers and they come alive and connect us to the world from the comfort of our living room couches. No need to be on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange to be at the forefront of trading - I can do that from my phone! You place an order. It fills. The market turns against you. You plan an exit strategy… and then... the power goes out. You wait. What else can you do? Thousands of dollars are riding on this trade that is about to expire in 45 minutes. If you think this never happens, think again. The good news is, you can prepare for such events. Wherever possible, make sure you have a backup system in place and ready to use at a moment's notice. I have extra computer monitors sitting in a closet, should any of the ones I'm using go dark. In my desk drawer are batteries, lots of them, and a wired mouse and keyboard just in case my wireless units fail. I make sure that my tech is plugged into a uninterrupted power supple (UPS). Not only does that protect me from power surges, but it gives me enough juice to close out positions in case of a power outage. Don't forget to keep your modem plugged into the UPS too and give it a test every now and then. Finally, I can use my phone or tablet to execute trades. Get to know how to navigate through your trading platform's app so that you can use it in a pinch. Point is, what may cost a little now may save you a lot in the long run. Investing in the right tech for your trades and ensuring you have a plan in case that tech fails is a prudent way to keep your money safe.
