Retail's future may be totally online August 29, 2023 | [Read Online]( Dawn Report August 29, 2023 One of San Franciscoâs biggest stores has closed for good. The San Francisco Centre Nordstrom is kaput after being besieged by crime. It had been open since 1988, and boasted about 30,000 square feet of space. Not anymore. Jamie Nordstrom, Chief Stores Officer, gave us a master class in euphemism when he said what had happened. âWeâve spent more than 35 years serving customers in downtown San Francisco, building relationships with them and investing in the local community,â he said. âBut as many of you know, the dynamics of the downturn San Francisco market have changed dramatically over the past several years, impacting customer foot traffic to our stores and our ability to operate successfully.â In other words - crime and squalor. One of the biggest things we will need to be looking for in the months to come are earnings results from retailers traditionally dependent on foot traffic. My belief is that an ever greater number of people are going to switch to an online focus - especially as Amazon continues to show impressive results. The key to remember is that Americaâs economy is booming - especially compared to the rest of the world - even as our major cities look worse than they have in decades. People are still making fortunes⦠but not in the same places. Make sure you arenât caught in the past. We can mourn whatâs happening - but our goal is to win, regardless of the policies in place and the business climate. Remember, always⦠Get Whatâs Yours, Jeff Bishop WORD ON THE STREET - 3M Co Gets A Boost On Settlement - MMM was up more than 5% yesterday after Bloomberg [reported](that the company had agreed to a major settlement. It will pay $5.5 billion to get past accusations of selling defective earplugs to the American military. It tells you something about the scale involved when a company says it is going to shell out $5.5 billion - and this is regarded as universally good news. - Biden Administration Continues Union Push - Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen politicized her office in an unusual way as her department said unions benefit âall demographic groups.â The Treasury Department [released](a first-of-its-kind report arguing for more unionization to combat income inequality. Vice President Kamala Harris also took aim at âtrickle-down economics,â which she charged hadnât helped those at the bottom of the economic ladder. - Trump Trial Before Super Tuesday - Former president Donald Trump [said](he would appeal a decision for a federal trial to begin one day before Super Tuesday. âToday a biased, Trump Hating Judge gave me only a two month extension, just what our corrupt government wants,â he said on Truth Social. â45 hasnât returned to Twitter, I mean X, since he posted a fundraising appeal (and his mug shot) a few days ago. - Businesses Cut Back On Borrowing As Interest Rates Surge - American companies [cut back]( on borrowing by 2% in July compared to a year earlier. Itâs a sign that businesses (and consumers) are slowing spending as interest rates bite. The question now is whether the Fed will achieve its âsoft landingâ for the economy, or whether the Fed will push us into a recession. HOT SPOTS: What's Going on in Geopolitics - British Air Traffic Control System Fails - The ânightmare scenarioâ hit the United Kingdom when the air traffic control system was [grounded](by technical problems. If Kyiv can hold on, itâs one of the first signs that it is actually retaking territory as it pounds well prepared Russian defenses. - Ecuador Looking To Follow El Salvador? - Presidential candidate Daniel Notboa is [pushing](a tough on crime policy in advance of a runoff election, claiming his country is fighting a âwarâ against narco-traffickers. There have already been casualties⦠presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was assassinated a few weeks ago. A crackdown on crime similar to that waged in El Salvador may prove popular - Ecuador hit a record murder rate in 2022. CUTTING EDGE: What['](s Happening In Tech - Big Mouse Pushing Cricket In Streaming War - Disneyâs biggest streaming market is actually India, though its operation lost money last year.
