That’s what these are for. Dressing for warmer weather weddings can be tough. Today’s scenario is for the most common, and most dressed up of weddings. The Groom and Groomsmen will be in black (rented) tuxedoes. One of them might pass out from heat stroke. Here’s one way to look your best while avoiding what most other men will wear… namely, a dark, heat absorbing suit + stuffy starched shirt and shiny tie combo. (Top Photo [Credit]() [Dressed up wedding 2021] The Suit: [Suitsupply Tropical Wool Light Grey Lazio Suit – $359](. Perfect for a warm or hot day. Tropical wool is lightweight and breathes great. [A mid gray suit]( would work great here as well. But charcoal (or navy) would absorb a lot of the suns rays, and you’d risk being super overheated and uncomfortable. Stick with a mid or light gray. If you’re buying a new suit, get it early, [and get it to the tailor](. They’re gonna be busy this year. A reminder that Suitsupply insists on using functioning sleeve cuff buttons. Which is a cool detail, but a pain to tailor. At least they ship and return for free in case the sleeves don’t [hit you right](. The Shirt: [Spier & Mackay Sky Blue Fine Twill Dress Shirt – $58](. Or whatever your favorite light blue dress shirt happens to be. [Nordy]( [Charles Tyrwhitt](//www.ctshirts.com/us/non-iron-poplin-shirt---sky/FON0216SKY.html?), [Ledbury]( whatever. It’s time to get dressed up. Wear your good stuff. The Tie: [TheTieBar Walnut Street Floral Navy Tie – $22](. It’s a wedding. Not [a job interview](. Have a little fun with it! If the contrast is a bit too bold for your personal tastes, [try this more muted option](. The Sunglasses: [Ray-Ban 54mm Polarized Wayfarer Sunglasses – $79.97]( ($179). They look great, feel great, and go with everything. For real. Everything from a suit and tie as shown here, to a t-shirt and shorts. Made in Italy. On sale via Nordstrom Rack. The Watch: [Q Timex 1978 – $169](. Classy as all heck. Leave the clunky sports watches at home for a dressed up occasion like this. Doesn’t have the loud Timex “tick” other, cheaper Timex watches seem to be saddled with. [Full review here](. “But the black leather band doesn’t match the brown suede shoes.” First, [no one is gonna notice](. Second, the suede of the shoes gives you more leeway. If it’s really gonna bug you, swap out the black band for a dark brown one. The Belt: [Marino Ratchet Belt in Amber – $18.99](. Weddings can be super fun. They can also be super uncomfortable! Because… drama. This is about as comfortable as a belt gets. Ratchet system leads to super precise, easy to adjust fit. And it looks like a regular belt. The Socks: [Allen Edmonds Over-the-Calf Merino Cool Dress Socks in Navy – $22.50](. “But your socks should match your trousers.” Eh. Whatever. Going for contrast here. Again, it’s a wedding. Over the calf means you won’t have to be constantly bending down and pulling up your slouching socks all evening. The Shoes: [Spier & Mackay Cap Toe Balmoral in Mocca Suede -$248](. Again, it’s a wedding and not a job interview. But smooth brown shoes (dark, medium maybe even walnut) would do just fine here too. Maybe you got something at the just-concluded Allen Edmonds Anniversary Sale? Make sure whatever you’re wearing is broken in though. Could be a long day/evening. The Tip: [Drink water. Lots of water](. Whether it’s stashing a Nalgene at your table or in your car or whatever, just freaking drink water. Being the sweaty drunk at the reception and the hungover guest the morning after just isn’t worth it. Stay hydrated, and ease off or skip the booze. It just causes way too much trouble at weddings. And if you do have to stand for any long periods of time during the ceremony, don’t lock your knees. Unless you REALLY don’t want to be there and a concussion/trip to the hospital/causing a huge scene is worth a hasty exit. The obligatory we’re not done with the pandemic yet reminder: This mess isn’t over. If you’re inside, [wear a mask]( (fingers crossed no one is having a wedding inside and inviting a bunch of elderly high-risk people). And remember that wearing a mask is hardly a 100% preventative measure. Masks knock down any coughing/sneezing/guffawing. They’re like the parachutes behind a drag racer. They help a lot, but they’re not foolproof. If you’re all up in somebody’s business shouting over the DJ, or doing a freaking conga line, and you’re inside a poorly ventilated church reception hall, a mask ain’t gonna be worth a damn if someone is shedding virus. [Get out of each other’s jet wash](. Outside > Inside. Mask + Social distancing > Just masked. ff/Dappered?a=CNh2hJpZGUo:sNwwse2KuVA:yIl2AUoC8zA ff/Dappered?a=CNh2hJpZGUo:sNwwse2KuVA:qj6IDK7rITs ff/Dappered?a=CNh2hJpZGUo:sNwwse2KuVA:gIN9vFwOqvQ [In Review: Banana Republic Tech Stretch Cotton Dress Shirts](r/Dappered/~3/9pFufIbuFd8/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email) Posted: 03 May 2021 11:00 AM PDT Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Slim-Fit Tech Stretch Cotton Dress Shirt – $48.33]( ($89.50) Pricing note: BR is running a quiet 46% off sale right now (40% off, then an additional 10% off that sale price) but it expires today, 5/3. Yet it’s BR, so, there’s almost always another sale/promo code coming. About the Author: Brandon D. is a trial attorney for the government living in Houston, Texas. He’s a new dad (#girldad for those of you who do hashtags), which has made working from home that much more interesting for him, his wife, and their dog Charlie. Author’s note: This outfit is from the [Roger Sterling collection](. A great band can only have one lead singer. So that means patterned pants go best with solid everything else. Editor’s note: there are no more notes. Let’s get on with the review. I know what you’re thinking. “[Isn’t Brandon D. the pants review guy](?” So before I get to my shirt review, here’s my review of these shirts if you were to wear them as pants: Worst pants ever. And now for the shirt review. Shown: Size Large on 5’11″/200. Trousers are J. Crew (last year) in their 770 fit. Boots are [R.M. Williams](. As a brief primer on how I got to these shirts from BR, I began my career as a trial attorney over eleven years ago. I was in court five days a week. So I was in a suit and tie five days a week. I needed several conservative dress shirts, as in “solid white only, but for Casual Friday, solid light blue is allowed.” In 2009 that meant going to Brooks Brothers. I probably had fifteen of their slim-fit non-iron dress shirts (now called [Regent Fitted Dress Shirt, Non-Iron Spread Collar](. These were the best. Sure, the arms were so wide I could [glide like Spider-Man](. But they fit perfectly in the neck and chest. And the quality was second-to-none. Unfortunately, so was the price. Even on sale. So over time, I transitioned to [Lands’ End Tailored Long Sleeve No Iron Straight Collar Pinpoint Dress Shirts](. Much better price. Much lower quality. But still good enough. To be sure, I tried our friends at [Charles Tyrwhitt]( and [Ledbury](. I can’t quite figure out why, but I didn’t like either option. Since they’re both so popular in these parts, and they do look great, I’m chalking this up to “[It’s not them, it’s me]( Merino vest from J. Crew (last year). [Tie from TheTieBar]( Made from 57% cotton, 40% COOLMAX polyester (I assume they’re yelling when they say “coolmax”), and 3% spandex, these certainly feel like the type of dress shirt you’d wear with your [Core Temp Chinos](. As in, they don’t feel like traditional all cotton dress shirts. They feel like they’re infused with some level of synthetic material that makes their excellent stretch possible. Yet they’re still quite comfortable. And they certainly look like just about every other pure cotton dress shirt I’ve owned. Not outlandishly shiny. And I would feel comfortable wearing them to work in any office setting. As for the specifics, the collar, sleeves, and chest make this shirt a real winner. Let’s start with the collar. It’s a traditional button-down collar that works in literally any office or casual setting. It’s not so wide that you’d look like an extra on Wall Street, and it’s not so thin that your tie won’t be fully hidden under it. So wear a tie or don’t. You’ll look great either way. Now, some might say that a button-down collar is too informal for some jobs. I refer those people to the embodiment of conservative dress wear, [Robert Mueller](. But, skip these shirts should you have to attend a wedding or a funeral. Sleeves are trimmed up without being tight. Cotton/poly fabric feels good and looks good. Not shiny or “tech-y”. The sleeves are another winner, though I’d add that they’re more of a winner if you have long arms like I do (5’11” height and 6’2” wingspan”). The shirts have two buttons at the cuff to accommodate a wristwatch, as well as a button at the midpoint of the sleeve opening. While the sleeves are certainly slimmer than those on their standard fit shirts, you don’t need to get rid of your tickets to the gun show to fit into these (but you do need to stop unironically saying “[gun show](. And should one of your sleeve or collar buttons break (this usually happens to me after several trips to the laundromat), the shirts come with two extra buttons sewn onto a tag on the inside of the shirt. And finally, the chest. But to be more specific, the width. I’m currently replacing all of my dress shirts, and because I already owned another shirt in this style, I assumed I fit into any slim fit Banana Republic dress shirt. I was wrong. Their other slim fit dress shirts are approximately 1” narrower in the chest (measuring the fullest/widest part of the chest). When I tried on those other slim fits, I felt constricted. For these tech-stretch shirts, however, the 1” wider chest meant that I got literally all of the advantages of BR’s slim fit shirts (narrower sleeves and body, and a more contemporary overall look). I wish they made all of their men’s dress shirts this way. There’s a bit of a goldilocks “just right” thing going on here. If BR’s other slim fits are just a bit tight on you? Try the tech-stretch. You’ll be pleasantly surprised. Easy to dress up or down. Shown here with the [Lands’ End Italian wool blazer](. As for a slight “negative,” since these shirts come in standard sizes (XXS – XXL) instead of specific collar/sleeve sizes, you might find that these shirts offer less than a perfect fit. With other brands, I’ve certainly found that to be the case. But here, these shirts fit just about as well as my favorite 16” neck/35” sleeve dress shirts. I’ll also note that these shirts don’t have a yoke on the back or side gussets, two features usually associated with providing greater range of motion and preventing ripping at the seams. But since these shirts are made from materials engineered to move with you, having these features would likely serve as a “belt and suspenders” feature. One more quality control negative: I was super excited to show how the solid white option looked, but [it arrived with a ripped collar](. Bummer. I will say that as a former BR employee ([seasonal help!](), and a current BR customer, my experience tells me that this issue is a one-off. But still, annoying. All told, these are great dress shirts. The solid white and light blue options rarely dip under 50% off ($44.50), but you might just find one of the patterned options dip below $20. The latter is an absolute steal and the former is a more than fair price for a quality white or light blue dress shirt. If these aren’t in the mix for your dress shirt rotation, they’re worth a test run and might just be your new go-to. ff/Dappered?a=9pFufIbuFd8:2TaAPRS2ofg:yIl2AUoC8zA ff/Dappered?a=9pFufIbuFd8:2TaAPRS2ofg:qj6IDK7rITs ff/Dappered?a=9pFufIbuFd8:2TaAPRS2ofg:gIN9vFwOqvQ [10 Best Bets for $75 or Less – Spring Shirts, Shave Bowls, & More](r/Dappered/~3/IqUCzjvj3ds/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email) Posted: 03 May 2021 08:00 AM PDT Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. It’s our monthly list of ten picks, each individually costing less than seventy five bucks. Got a tip on something for under $75? Send those in to joe@dappered.com. [J. Crew Factory Short-sleeve flex washed casual shirt – $35ish]( [J. Crew Factory Short-sleeve flex washed casual shirt]( Lobster shirt is this year’s [Shark shirt](. Slim fit here. That helps. Don’t want a billowing thing. And while we’re on lobsters… I’ve never understood why they’re considered a delicacy. They’re sea scorpions. Picture this with me: One night you go to the fridge for a midnight snack, and from some dark corner of your kitchen you see [a freaking LOBSTER]( scurry across the floor. You’d be dead on your feet before the leftover lasagna dish you were holding hits the floor. So yeah. We don’t eat creepy crawly things. Unless they come from the sea? Beats me. [Old Navy Twill Jogger Shorts – $24]( ($26.99) [Old Navy Twill Jogger Shorts]( You won’t be able to escape the drawstring shorts trend this summer. They were already getting popular over the last couple years, and then a year of sweatpants hit and… bang. Thankfully, these aren’t terry material. Twill instead. A bit cooler and crisper for warm days. [Spier and Mackay Linen Shorts – $58]( [Spier and Mackay Linen Shorts]( And now something much more dressed up. Which isn’t possible, because they’re shorts, but they’re still pretty smart looking all the same. 100% linen. 2-point closure looks pretty stylish. Sorta… old-Hollywood? Did [Deano]( ever wear shorts by the pool at the Sands? [Banana Republic Core Temp Chore Coat – $64.26]( ($119) [Core Temp Chore Coat]( Was just 46% – 52% off during their spring refresh sale. Should drop under our $75 self imposed ceiling the next time they run a (standard) 40% off deal. Core temp everything! Because a denim jacket can be hard to wear with jeans. Terrific potential here as a three season jacket. [Wipebook Pro+ – $45]( [Wipebook Pro+]( For the note takers. The doodlers. The worriers. I took a look around the Dappered home offices the other day and just started counting the post-it notes. BECAUSE WHAT IF I FORGET, GUYS. I was horrified. This should help clear up clutter, is easy to erase when tasks are done, and heck if it all gets too much? Close it. Close the damn cover. Close. It. [Allen Edmonds Polka Dot Merino Cool Dress Socks – $14.63]( ($19.50) [Allen Edmonds Polka Dot Merino Cool Dress Socks]( The big Anniversary Sale ends today, and one more reminder that it’s more than just shoes. These merino cool socks, made here in the USA by Wigwam, are tremendous. More cushioning than a standard dress sock but still not thick. And the dot pattern here is a nice way to mix things up without going full craaaaazzzzzaaay socks! [Vikings Blade The Chairman Luxury Shaving Bowl – $19.97]( [Vikings Blade The Chairman Luxury Shaving Bowl]( Via our man Aaron K.: When I was a kid, I remember seeing my grandfather shave with a beaten-up, wood-handled brush and a cup of lather. In an effort to turn around the rather unpleasant task that shaving had become, I decided to switch to a more classic setup, like my grandfather. While a safety razor is optional, making one’s own shaving lather with a brush and a bowl makes shaving a more enjoyable ritual, and much less mundane. Plus, brushing lather into one’s scruff is, in this shaver’s opinion, much more pleasant than the *pshhhhht* & wipe from a can. There are a myriad of equipment options out there, and I settled on [this bowl from Vikings Blade](. Dubbed ‘The Chairman,’ it can be had in Standard (3” diameter, and seen here) or Large sizes (Large offering a 3.55” diameter and 2x the the depth of the Standard). The standard isn’t particularly big, but works great for the cream & brush that I use. The bowl is made of a slightly textured stainless steel to help with grip and frothing up the shave cream/soap. If you’re worried about dropping & breaking a ceramic shave bowl in the bathroom, [The Chairman’s]( got you covered. After 2 years of use, this one still looks great. I’m guessing this bowl will pretty much last forever. [Banana Republic Factory Water Resistant Mac ($95.99)]( + [some cheap socks ($7.98)]( = $50.78 w/ TAKE50 [Banana Republic menswear]( Here’s how this works. BR Factory is running a quiet $50 off $100 code right now (TAKE50) and those timeless macs are pretty close to the $100 threshold. Tested this out, and it seems like clearance items do in fact, count towards the $100 total. So, by getting a pair of cheap socks, you send that $95.99 mac over the edge of the $100 level, and fifty bucks comes off. Macs are so great. Nowhere near as showy as a trench, and immensely versatile. Wear it with everything from joggers to suits. Really. Big thanks to Derek B. for the tip here! [Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry – $14.69]( [Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry]( Our monthly book suggestion from Jeremy Anderberg, who among other things works for [Art of Manliness](, but also has [his own terrific “What to Read Next” newsletter](. You should [sign up for it](. Here’s his review: “With the passing of American legend Larry McMurtry, you may have seen Lonesome Dove getting more attention as of late. It’s an epic, 800-page Western novel, which may seem awfully intimidating at first blush. Here’s my promise, though: it’s the most readable 800 pages you’ll ever encounter. At the core of the story are retired Texas Rangers Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call. They operate a little ranch on the southern border of Texas and decide to make a big cattle drive up to the ever-green pastures of Montana. Though the backdrop is that of a Western, the book is really about these two old friends trying to find some adventure, and even contentment, after the apex of their careers have passed. As with all of McMurtry’s work, it’s the characters and the dialogue that make the novel shine. Lonesome Dove is the Western against which all other Westerns are to be judged and it’s one of my all-time favorites. (Don’t sleep on [the other three books](, either. They’re all very good.)” [Slim Baird McNutt Irish Linen Shirt – $89.50]( [Slim Baird McNutt Irish Linen Shirt]( Over the $75 threshold for now, but with J. Crew there’s always another promo headed down the line. Drops to $62.50 with a 30% off code. Fingers crossed for one of those (or better) in the not too distant future. Big thanks to Roy G. for the suggestion here, who said they’re really nicely done, and yes while spendy, are available to be had on sale from time to time.
