That’s what these are for. [Danny Ocean]( was (sometimes) right when he said “[you gotta walk before you crawl](.” Occasionally, you just have to throw yourself into it, and then maybe back off a bit later. That might just be the case, now, almost a year into athleisure. That doesn’t mean we’re not sticking with a tried and true “cleaner than the board of health” look here. A look favored by Mr. Ocean, in the Stephen Soderbergh directed [Ocean’s Triology](. Ocean’s 11 is twenty years old. TWENTY. And it still looks great. Sure, fits change over time. But some looks are pretty eternal. Proof below. [Style Scenario Suited Up for No Reason 12220] The Suit: [Spier and Mackay Medium Gray Sharkskin Wool Suit – $348](. Or whatever your preferred medium gray suit happens to be. [Suitsupply works great]( (for the true slim fellas), as does [Black Lapel]( if you’re the hard to fit type and need to go with online-custom. Ocean seems to favor gray. Lots of medium gray and charcoal gray. The guy just doesn’t seem to wear blue much. Navy would work here too, with such a simple outfit, but gray seems to be the character’s forte. The Pocket Square: [Solid Linen White Pocket Square – $12](//www.thetiebar.com/product/PL054). A pocket square with a tipped border would look great here too. And come to think of it… I don’t think Danny Ocean wore a pocket square in the movies? Doesn’t matter! Looks good. The Shirt: [Ledbury Fine Twill Mid Spread Dress Shirt – $135]( Spendy, but worth every penny. A shirt that was born for this kind of look. Terrific collar, and that slightly lowered 2nd button is perfect. Cheaper alternative would be [the ol’ Nordy Standby](. No lowered second button there though. The Sunglasses: [Kent Wang Aviator Sunglasses – $55](. No acetate frames for Danny. All wire frames, all the time. These are affordable, and Kent Wang does a great job on this sort of thing. The Watch: [Tissot Visodate Automatic – $399](//www.jomashop.com/tissot-visodate-men-watch-t0194301603101.html?utm_medium=cpa&utm_campaign=4025845&utm_source=CJ&cjevent=3a2bf7f964d511eb830a00160a1c0e0d&cjdata=MXxOfDB8WXww). Or whatever your favorite simple dress watch happens to be. No divers or other tool watches here. You’re looking for clean and classic. A cheaper alternative would be [Orient’s Bambino](. Since the character is being played by Clooney in the movies, one can assume whatever he’s wearing is an Omega. Or maybe that was so early(ish) on in his big-screen career that he hadn’t cut that deal yet? Watch at the very, very top of the post is a 15+ year old fashion brand (BCBG Max Azaria) dress chronograph that Mrs. Dappered gifted me. That was kinda my first watch. So whenever [I buy another silly timepiece](, I always tell her: “you started this.” The Shoes: [Kent Wang Benchgrade Captoe Balmoral – $295]( ($350). Or whatever your favorite dark brown pair of simple dress shoes happens to be. Usually Allen Edmonds would slide in here… but it seems like they’re just not making a lot of true, dark brown dress shoes these days. C’mon AE. Give us some classics! Also worth a mention would be [Spier’s Cap Toes](, and if you’re looking to go less expensive, the Italian Made [Massimo Matteo line from Zappos](//www.zappos.com/p/massimo-matteo-6-eye-bal-cap-toe-brown/product/8296580/color/6) should do the trick too. The Socks: [Nordstrom Men’s Shop Charcoal Over the Calf Wool Socks – $5.80]( ($14.50). You know it, you love it. Long time readers (or heck, even short time readers) of Dappered have seen these socks a zillion times. But they’re kinda sorta just right. And they’re on sale for UNDER six bucks! The Belt: [Nordstrom Newman Reversible Leather Belt – $49.50]( A basic, reversible, do-anything dress belt. Ships and returns for free. ff/Dappered?a=I_YsJedb-Aw:Tlquqkg1a-E:yIl2AUoC8zA ff/Dappered?a=I_YsJedb-Aw:Tlquqkg1a-E:qj6IDK7rITs ff/Dappered?a=I_YsJedb-Aw:Tlquqkg1a-E:gIN9vFwOqvQ [The Dappered Space: Most Wanted Affordable Home Style February 2021](r/Dappered/~3/txh8CU0B1bI/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email) Posted: 02 Feb 2021 02:00 PM PST Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. [The Dappered Space]( is a series designed to help guys apply the sense of personal style they’ve developed to the space they inhabit. Watch for articles on furniture and decor sales & picks, advice on how to style a room or work space, and tackling creating a space that reflects your own (and perhaps a significant other’s) personal tastes. We’ll suggest items that can be sourced online, but always keep in mind that deals can be found at consignment and thrift stores, local stores with floor models, discount stores, and even yard sales. [Umbra Trigon Memo Board – $43]( Lacking a memo board of any kind in my home office space, for the past several months I’ve been using painters tape to stick things to my wall by my desk. Might be time for an upgrade. Sure, you could opt for a corkboard, but there are more stylish options out there for not that much more cash. Case in point above. [Stone & Beam 5 x 8 Geometric Cotton Area Rug – $119.99]( Been looking to add some color to your space but in a more subdued way? This cotton area rug from Amazon’s Stone & Beam brand uses toned down colors to create this woven rug. Also available in 8 x 10. [Stikkan Spantan Handheld Kindling Splitter – $35]( Sold by Huckberry, this handy kindling splitter is a good option for indoor use, if you just don’t want to head out into the cold to split some wood. Would make a good housewarming gift to someone who bought a home with a wood burning stove or fireplace. [Yamazaki Pet Bowl with Stand – $35 FINAL]( A sleek way to keep your cat or small dog fed and watered. Powder steel frame with ceramic bowls. Only the best for little fluffy. Well, that, and this looks a heck of a lot better than plastic dishes. [Black And White Geometric Art – $11.88+]( Sold by Etsy shop Senna-Mi, this print is not framed, so you’ll have to take care of that part. But if you like simple, geometric art, well here you go. Hang it or set it on a table like seen above. Don’t be afraid to turn it on its side as well. You’re not chained to the norms, you art rebel, you. [Mid-Century Tiered Drink Table – $119.99]( ($179) All things trendy (marble, walnut, black) come together to create this little drink table that would look great in a corner with a plant or lamp on top, but can be easily be moved for utilitarian use if needed. Currently on clearance at West Elm. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head [here]( to learn more. What are you going to wear? Sometimes it’s good to look at a few suggestions then add your own tweaks and ideas. That’s what these are for. This is the third and final episode in a trilogy of style scenarios espousing the versatility of the simple, camel cardigan sweater. [In the first scenario]( I wore it with a white button-down shirt and navy blue corduroy pants. [In the second]( I paired it with burgundy and pink. Now let’s take a look at one final way to style the versatile camel cardigan. [Camel Cardigan 3] The Sweater: [Spier & Mackay Light Brown Cardigan – $68](. Wear it over a button-down shirt as a nice alternative to a crew neck or V-neck sweater. Also a relaxed alternative to a structured blazer or sportcoat. Merino wool is the next best thing to cashmere and will set you back a lot less money, and the camel color pairs well with nearly everything. My cardigan from Banana Republic is no longer available, but this one should do just fine. The Tie: [The Tie Bar Grenlaux Hunter Green Tie – $22](//www.thetiebar.com/product/31993). Green and brown are often seen together in nature, and I’m pulling inspiration for this pairing from trees when their leaves are green. A tie with texture makes the outfit a little more casual. The Shirt: [Bonobos Daily Grind Wrinkle Free Dress Shirt in Navy Gingham – $34]( (final sale). The shirt I’m wearing in the photo is a brown houndstooth offering from Paul Fredrick that is sold out. Turns out white shirts with a bold brown pattern are hard to come by, so I’m substituting this Bonobos navy gingham in. And hey, we’re still sticking with the nature theme here. Blue sky, right? It’s a sartorial tapestry of nature’s palette, quite literally from the ground… all the way up. Now, if you want to super stick with the brown and green theme, [you can always utilize a brown striped shirt like this one](dar012b?color=brown). The Watch: [Orient Bambino Automatic – $118](. Can’t beat a classic like this. Crisp hands, just-right size, timeless design. The Belt: [Banana Republic Italian Leather Belt – $41]( ($59.50). A simple brown leather belt to match the suggested shoes. Often (always?) on sale. The Socks: [Nordstrom Signature Merino Wool Blend Socks – $6.60]( ($16.50). Brown to go with the brown chinos. If you can find some brown socks with a green pattern, even better! The Pants: [Spier & Mackay Brown Chinos – $48](. Brown to keep the brown and green nature theme going. Darker brown pants make a nice contrast with the camel colored cardigan, and they can be paired with a variety of colors in both the spring, and darker months of fall and winter. The Shoes:[Allen Edmonds Fifth Avenue Cap-Toe Oxford – $299]( ($395.00). Or your favorite pair of brown brogues. Mine are a discontinued wingtip model by Allen Edmonds, but the iconic Fifth Avenue will look great with this outfit and much more. Currently on sale. The Optional Statement: [Johnston & Murphy Colorful Laces – $4](. Green laces to coordinate with the green tie, if that’s your thing. Swapping out the laces for different colors is a quick way to change the look of your shoes for just a few dollars. [Walmart’s “Free Assembly” Clothing for Men]( About the Author: Paul K., formally from Atlanta, lives and works as an IT administrator in Los Angeles. When he’s not busy freelancing as a photographer and videographer, you can find him getting his steps in on the many hiking trails of SoCal. The collective thoughts on the announcement of [Walmart buying Bonobos for $310 million back in 2017]( had the Dappered community worried about what changes the big box store would inflict on the brand. Concerns that quality would be stripped down in the attempt to sell Bonobos branded in their big box stores was a shared feeling across the forums. But alas, and for our reliefs, [Wally World decided to position Bonobos co-founder, Andy Dunn, to lead its “digital brands” section](, and it appears (for now) that the Bonobos brand has been mostly(?) left on its own, to do its own thing. Yet the Bonobos/Dunn influence wasn’t (wait for it)… done. A separate move (possibly to counter [Target’s own Goodfellow & Co]() was released in the same year. Fast-forward three years and the fruition of that brand, Free Assembly, is here. Supplying to both Men’s and Women’s wear, albeit quietly and without much fanfare. So with that, we have taken the liberty of reviewing some ‘stylish to the Dappered.com eye’ pieces below. Let’s roll. Sizing Note: I am 5’10 / 175 lbs, all tops and jackets are in a medium size. Pants are in a 32×30 size. [Everyday Oxford Shirt in Blue – $14]( ($23) [Free Assembly Everyday Oxford Shirt in Blue]( Starting off, we have a men’s button-down Oxford shirt with a left chest pocket. Surprisingly, not bad. Fit borders on slim but not body hugging stuffy for a size medium. Sleeves fit well and length isn’t too much of a problem. Though I usually break in my Oxfords in a wash beforehand, there’s a slight softness right away. A timeless, oxford cloth button down, pale-light blue here, but they have other colors and a few patterns too. [Camo Print Bomber Jacket – $25]( ($45) [Free Assembly Camo Print Bomber Jacket]( Lighter weight jacket than many other Bombers out there, with a darker, more muted camo green and quilted seams that doesn’t scream for attention. Sizing feels like a standard as there is a slight ‘puffiness’ to the back, sides, and sleeves, but this can accommodate for layering up. Perhaps to cut down on wind chill sneaking in, the placket/closure is a combo of being buttoned and zipped. Each works well on its own, or in conjunction. A very minor issue is the interior is a very loud “hunting vest” orange , and there’s no interior pockets to speak of. Still, definitely one of the better items of this bunch. [Men’s Chino Pants in OD Olive – $14]( ($25) [Free Assembly Men's Chino Pants]( Probably one of the worst fits out of this batch. Not feeling these at all. Though they’re labeled as a relaxed fit, that info is buried in the fine print. Everything is just loose throughout the legs. The only praise I have is the attention to detail with the inner waistband and pockets, which have a softer feel compared to the rough inner pockets of some pants that need to be softened with a couple of washes. Definitely a hard pass. [Full Zip Vest with Patch Pocket in Natural – $28]( [Free Assembly Full Zip Vest with Patch Pocket in Natural]( For transparency’s sake, I am not a fan of jackets comprised of fleece on the outer shell. More so, just because I’m clumsy and late-night dinners (or morning breakfast) at a Waffle House and after my All Star Special I always end up with a patch of syrup spilled somewhere. So, not for me, but maybe for the more outdoorsy types looking for thin layering. The fleece material is indeed soft and the collar zips all the way up to convert it to a mock neck for warmth. The zippers and cords attached have a contrasting color with mesh lining for the pockets. A strange find is that the chest pocket is just a piece of fabric sewn over the fleece. Don’t store any pens that could leak. [Chore Jacket in Olive – $18]( ($30) [Free Assembly Chore Jacket in Olive]( A lightweight chore jacket that frankly doesn’t give much to desire for. Sizing for medium can be confused for a large, which is most noticeable in the sleeves due to the overall diameter. Maybe not a problem for the Hulkster is his prime, but overall the jacket felt baggy. Even the side pockets are hilariously huge compared to other jackets and blazers with external pockets that I have. Texture and feel can be summed up with one word: staunchness. For those that favor a more relaxed cut for a chore jacket, I would still suggest you down. [Unlined Fishtail Parka Jacket – $25]( ($30) [Free Assembly Unlined Fishtail Parka Jacket]( Though there are some details done right, sizing can be a bit problematic. Features such as [a hidden internal drawstring to allow adjusting is quite welcomed](. The same drawstring is also in a fishtail, which is a nice touch to slim down the bottom of the jacket. What doesn’t work for me is the sizing. I’m swimming in a medium and could wrap the jacket fronts over each other to demonstrate how big this is. Sleeve length is also a concern, as they span all the way down to my second knuckle of my middle finger, when my arms are straight at my sides. (My dress shirt sleeve length is 33.) I would recommend to size down if you’re in between sizes, or order both your regular and one size down for fit comparison. The Hood is not detachable. Material is an 83% polyester / 17% cotton mix. [Selvedge Slim Fit Jeans in Rinse 3D – $34]( ($40) [Free Assembly Selvedge Slim Fit Jeans in Rinse 3D]( Some pros to highlight are the coloring of the dark denim. The seams are nicely done, with hardly any strays, say, compared to Old Navy. The zipper, pockets, and stitching are also executed nicely for anyone concerned with little details. Some concerns though, straight off the bat, is that this feels more like Slim Straight versus a true Slim. A small but noticeable issue is that the belt loops are strangely large and that they billow out when you might not be wearing a belt. Also, our shipment came with [the front pant pockets whiskered](, compared to what the model is wearing on the site. Unmistakable [red selvedge seams](, for those that like to cuff. [Star of the Show: Men’s Everyday Diamond Quilted Vest in Dark Navy – $20]( ($30) [Free Assembly Men's Everyday Diamond Quilted Vest in Dark Navy]( A lightweight, quilted vest that fits well. Navy for sure, but not a midnight/almost black navy. The mock neck features a soft, ribbed collar that extends for some protection. Slant pockets fit well but have no snaps for closure. A square seam of stitching is on the upper back area, yet no branding to be found. Not much insulation for the more dreary, colder weather but overall is nice to wear for early spring temps. Aside from no internal pockets and the loud orange inner shell (just like the camo bomber), it’s worth a grab when on sale. Some hits, some misses. Which is to be expected. [Hululemonluckberry Navigation Down Jacket in Grey Sage – $248]( About the Author: Jason P. spends his days working in the creative marketing department of a big telecom company. He also does a bit of real estate investing on the side. He believes in curating a timeless, classic wardrobe with subtle modern touches for today. He and his wife love hiking with their dog and shopping at local small businesses and antique stores when they travel. Jason is a practitioner of muay thai and traditional boxing, and his favorite drink is a hoppy New England IPA. Good brands don’t stay stagnant. They cultivate a culture of innovation in design and construction and seek to bring forth incremental, beneficial changes to their product lines. Lululemon is one of the premier innovators in the activewear industry, while Huckberry has built a business on curating high-end men’s apparel and gear with a focus on form and function. Surely, a collaboration between the two is obvious. But is it a success? Many brands have tried collaborating on their individual success, only to find joint failure. Huckberry and Lululemon have joined forces to build a well-designed winter jacket with relative sleek warmth. But, it won’t be for everyone. Read on to see if it’s a smart selection for your closet in this review of form and function. Size medium on 5’7″/175. Not overly puffy. No mallowing here! Form First things first. Here at Dappered, we strive to help you look your best with smart-looking, timeless pieces. As expected with this partnership, this jacket doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it fine tunes a proven formula with great stylistic results. Down jackets, especially with these filled baffles, have a tendency to look over-puffed and make you look like [a gigantic, mallow menace](. Not so with this jacket, my friends. Huckberry and Lululemon absolutely nailed the fit. No billowing or overly-puffed regions to speak of, and it wasn’t too slim. Too slim that I resembled a lumpy sausage. The inclusion of stretch nylon and elastane on the outer shell keeps the jacket flowing with you, and allows for that closer fit without feeling constrained. Goldilocks. Has some shape to it. A better than good fit. Moves great. The sleeve length on this size Medium is decent for my 5’7″, 175 pound frame. I often struggle with sleeves that are too long for the torso sizes I need, but found this jacket to fit my arms nicely. For winter jackets like this, I don’t mind if the sleeves hit slightly past the base of my palm. If this doesn’t apply to you, you have about 1.5″-2″ of leeway before the sleeves might start to get a little short. Keep that in mind when you consider sizing. Same story for the overall length. Sleeves and body aren’t overly long. Great fit. Grey Sage is a perfect description for the color. Depending how the light catches it, the tones of green will be stronger or lighter. This is very clearly where the Huckberry aspect of the partnership comes into play, as the color is an exceptional representation of outdoors exploration and adventure. It reminds me of lighter-colored moss on trees. A lot of heritage outerwear brands will offer jackets like this in black, dark grey, a darker earth tone, and some bright color like school bus yellow or crimson red. While other brands – notably, Arc’teryx – are moving toward a wider color palette, options like this grey sage are still fairly hard to come by, and it is a MOST welcomed sight on this jacket. If you’re the outdoorsy type, and your aesthetic aim is to blend in to your surroundings, you won’t do much better than this. Unless you wear camouflage. But, don’t do that. If you’re a city dweller and want to stand out from the flocks of black and navy clad puffer wearers? This provides a terrific alternative. Function For all the proper styling, if any given piece doesn’t function as intended, you might end up in stylish discomfort. And discomfort often leads to a lack of confidence. With outerwear, particularly that designed for woodland or snowy adventures, a jacket should inspire confidence. Product tags claim this is a “High Warmth” jacket, filled with “responsibly sourced down or Primaloft insulation,” while the product page makes no mention of the primaloft? The features/description, at post time, also says “Cinchable hood keeps your head warm.” Not seeing a hood (it’s not hidden/stuffed inside the collar as some jackets provide). Something odd happened here when the words got put on their site. Tags could be more helpful by providing specific temperature ratings or ranges for which the jacket was built. On the tag, a convenient little graphic shows this is a middle-of-the-pack jacket with regards to warmth. This is all fairly vague and confusing, and a graphic showing a warmth rating around the middle is not what I would call “high,” so I put it to the test in as many varying temperatures as possible. I popped on the jacket , overtop nothing more than [this long sleeve tee]( and took the dog for a walk in the early morning. I also had on pants. Make sure to wear pants outside your house. The temperature read 18 degrees Fahrenheit, so I had my doubts as I stepped out the door. Thankfully, the jacket held up well over a 20 minute walk. However, the cold started creeping in and I was very chilly toward the end of the walk. This is not a jacket I’d recommend for extended use alone below 32 degrees. You’re going to want a heftier, insulated jacket rated for sub-freezing temps in those conditions. Later in the day, a strong gust was aloft so I stepped outside to see how the jacket would perform in windy conditions. The product tags claim use of a “windproof fabric,” while again, the product page on Huckberry’s website makes no mention of such material. More inconsistency in the product description. Yet the website wins out, as this just did not feel windproof to me. Despite the temperature sitting in the mid-30’s, the cold air hit me fast and furiously and was more jarring than the 15 degree-colder temperature from the morning. You can use this as a base layer under a proper wind shell for blustery conditions. Well, it is good advice. In the evening, with the wind subsided and cloud cover providing extra warmth, the jacket offered ample warmth and movement as the dog chased and barked after phantom shadows in the woods. At a windless temperature of 34 degrees, this jacket found a sweet spot. For me, the ideal temperature range for this jacket is around 30 degrees on the lower limit and 50 degrees on the higher limit. As always, your mileage may vary. Storage is basic, but thoughtful. Two zippered hand pockets and an interior zippered chest pocket provide ample storage for basic adventures or outings. A sturdy collar with Huckberry branding offers more warmth than a typical floppy collar. Nicely done. With proper good looks, Huckberry and Lululemon stay on-brand with an ideal jacket for outdoor adventures in not super freezing temps with minimal wind. Some more specific data on what it’s good for (and what it’s not good for) would be appreciated, but free shipping and returns minimizes those risks. ff/Dappered?a=imtbKoWfLys:rfLrvDwRagk:yIl2AUoC8zA ff/Dappered?a=imtbKoWfLys:rfLrvDwRagk:qj6IDK7rITs ff/Dappered?a=imtbKoWfLys:rfLrvDwRagk:gIN9vFwOqvQ You are subscribed to email updates from [Dappered Style Mail]().
