[Made in the USA Allen Edmonds Nomad Chelsea – $149.99]( ($375) Note: These are part of today’s [one day AE $150 and under flash sale](. Some pretty odd stuff in that sale, but these are very much in it too. Markdown happens in cart. Ah boot season. It is not boot season. Boot season it is not. But even in the summer, you can get away with certain styles of boots. Like Chukkas! [Especially suede chukkas](. But these aren’t chukkas. So what about chelseas? I think so, as long as they’re suede. So [these things](? With a light gray linen suit and crisp white shirt? Why not? You do not get five shoes with each purchase. That would be something if you did. These Nomad chelseas in snuff suede will certainly excel in the fall. Which is just around the corner (hard to believe… just a bit has happened in 2020). Suede is treated to be water resistant too. And while [the higher end Liverpools]( are nicer than the Nomads, $150 for these snuff suede chelseas is certainly steal worthy. Assuming you don’t get a pair with any quality control issues. These shouldn’t be factory 2nds though. They’re not labeled as such. Free shipping too. Just a note that the Nomad collection as a whole are lighter weight than a standard pair of AE shoes or boots. Still recraftable. Still made in the USA. Just not quite as substantial feeling. But that’s on purpose. Part of today’s [one day AE $150 and under flash sale](. Which is full of mostly… weird stuff. But not all weird stuff. Mostly though. That’s all. Carry on. [AE Steal alert 72820] The rest of the somewhat “normal” selections from today’s one day sale. - [Kenilworth Plain-Toe Blucher – $149.99]( ($395) - [Cyrus Chukka Boot – $149.99]( ($395) - [Alpine Lace-to-Toe Boot with Vibram Arctic Grip Rubber Sole – $149.99]( ($425) - [Higgins Mill Boot with Waxed Suede Leather – $149.99]( ($425) ff/Dappered?a=OmdX9zrc8qw:znLb-Ako3aM:yIl2AUoC8zA ff/Dappered?a=OmdX9zrc8qw:znLb-Ako3aM:qj6IDK7rITs ff/Dappered?a=OmdX9zrc8qw:znLb-Ako3aM:gIN9vFwOqvQ [What I Wear to Work: Mike, Air Force Pilot (part 2, suited)](r/Dappered/~3/ZYA1AhJyV6s/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email) Posted: 28 Jul 2020 03:00 AM PDT Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head [here]( to learn more. Welcome to “[What I Wear to Work](.” A series on, you guessed it, who wears what to work. Obviously things have changed, drastically, since we launched this series (see our other series, [What I wore today working from home](). But some people are still very much going to work. Because, for example, it’s hard to fly planes from your home office. If you’re one of those, and want to be featured, see the bottom of this post for instructions. Same goes for those of us who are still doing the WFH thing. Be safe out there. About the Author: An Air Force pilot for the last 11 years, [Mike]( is currently stationed in the Washington, DC area. He’s currently assigned to getting various official folks from point A to point B by getting a big metal tube with wings to go up and down in a controlled manner. Although he’s often told what to wear by the government, he enjoys finding the right wardrobe pieces that are long-lasting and sharp-looking. Mike also documents his global flying adventures on his successful Instagram page – [@vectors_to_final]( – where he provides followers an inside look at flying and the occasional dad joke (or three). [Style Scenario What I Wear to Work Mike Air Force Pilot 2 SUITED] Background: Air Force pilots, once done with pilot training, split their time between office duties and actually flying aircraft. When I’m “flying a desk” or flying local training flights, [I wear a flight suit](; when I fly overseas, I wear a suit. Often our “duty day” (from showing up to work to flying to entering the hotel at night) can be up to 26 hours long. The clothing I wear on the road must not only present a conservative, professional image but also be comfortable for very long days. The Suit: [Jos. A. Bank 1905 Collection Tailored (Custom) – $800]( (but never buy full price – Jos. A. Bank [is known for ridiculous sales](). I can hear the eye rolls already at the price and the fact that the suit is from Jos. A. Bank but hear me out… I own both a charcoal and navy suit in this collection for a very important reason – it’s the cheapest (when often on sale) custom-made suit available. Due to my 10-inch “drop” between my chest and waist, I absolutely cannot buy off-the-rack suiting so I’m left to hunt the internet and stores for custom options. I bought both suits (and extra pants for both) for around $1000 at the time. The jacket is half-lined (good) with a cotton-blend poplin (not so good). While wool would be better, it’s also more expensive and I don’t expect to have a long life for either suit. Why? you may ask. Grease from aircraft parts, pant tears from crawling underneath the jet, or just sitting in an airplane for 20 hours leads to a shorter suit lifespan. For these suiting options, I’m trying to balance quantity with quality. The Tie: [The Tie Bar Mini Dots Azalea Tie – $25](//www.thetiebar.com/product/31717sk). Ties are generally a clothing article you can save money on. These 100% silk ties are a great purchase and the available designs mirror what you can find in other stores for about half the price. I wear a 2.5-inch tie-width which is just a touch on the skinny side but for the price, have no problem updating my sizes in a decade when wider (or skinnier) ties are “in.” The Tie Bar: (seems redundant to say) [The Tie Bar Platinum – $16](//www.thetiebar.com/product/TBR-3495-0278). Hunting for a cheap tie bar is what led me to this website (and the eventual purchase of ties and shirts, too). I make sure my tie bar is narrower than my tie so I wear a 1.5-inch bar with my 2.5-inch and 3-inch ties. The Shirt: [The Tie Bar Solid Non-Iron – $55](//www.thetiebar.com/product/SHR-3972-0201). I was surprised at the quality of these shirts when I first purchased them on a whim from the internet – they’re a great fit and super comfortable. With a “free shirt” coupon layered on top of other discounts, the Tie Bar runs good deals on their products. Obviously, this non-iron shirt is essential for long duty days. The Belt: [Banana Republic Reversible Leather – $39]( ($65). Simple, 2-color leather belt. By the belt being reversible, I never worry about grabbing the wrong belt out of a dark closet in the morning. There are some cheaper options for single-color belts out there but those belts are usually made of inferior leather and tend to have short lifespans. The Watch: [Breitling Aerospace Evo – $4400](. Like a lot of pilots, I identify as a “watch guy” so I tend to spend extra money on my watch collection. I’ve been flying with this Aerospace for years and have never regretted the purchase. With multiple time zones, dual analog and digital displays, titanium build (insanely light weight!), and scratch resistance, this is the epitome of a pilot’s watch. I did NOT (and would not suggest it) buy this watch at full price. There are a ton of “grey market” and pre-owned websites to purchase this timepiece from. In addition, companies like Hamilton or Victorinox make look-alike watches for a fraction of the cost. The Socks: [Express Ombre Polka Dot – $11](//www.express.com/clothing/men/ombre-polka-dot-dress-socks/pro/04601751/color/dark%20blue/). Even though we abide by a “conservative” dress code, socks are rarely visible. Some guys go super loud with their socks and show them off in the cockpit; most guys go with something more muted. Express (and Express Outlets) often have solid deals on both types of socks. The Shoes: [Ecco Vitrus III – $111 – $180](. Before purchasing these shoes, I did a lot of research online about the “best” pilot or traveler shoe. It turns out these shoes don’t have a metal shank (better for airport security) and have outstanding durability. Most important, I can personally attest that these are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn – they feel like you’re walking on clouds. And having to wear them for 24+ hours, that’s a blessing. I own these plain blucher (or derby) shoes in black (so I can also wear them in my Air Force uniforms) and brown quarter brogue bluchers. Did I already mention how comfortable they are? Sold in EU sizes. The Undershirt: [Jockey Grey V-neck $15](. Who makes the shirt isn’t a big deal; what’s most important is the color. I opt for a heathered grey undershirt because it 1) is closer to my skin tone under white dress shirts and 2) can be used the next morning as a workout shirt in my hotel gym. Being closer to my skin tone than a plain white undershirt, it doesn’t even look like I’m wearing an undershirt even with a white (or light-colored) dress shirt. On top of that, when I use the previous day’s grey V-neck shirt as workout attire, I save space in my luggage and don’t look like I’m just showing up to the gym in a white undershirt. Pro Tip #1: [Tide To Go Pen – $3](. I always keep one of these pens in my bag. Because the day I wear a white shirt is the day the in-flight meal changes to pasta with marinara sauce. Pro Tip #2: [Cotton Handkerchief – $2](. I started carrying a handkerchief a few years ago and feel better prepared for the world in general. I use it to dry my hands if the bathroom is out of paper towels, to dust off cockpit displays, to immediately dab up small spills, etc. A minimal investment to counter life’s inconveniences. Pro Tip #3: [Metal Collar Stays – $8](. For whatever reason, I tend to misplace my plastic collar stays on laundry day. I never misplace these ones and their hefty weight does a better job at maintaining my collar shape. Pro Tip #4: [Colored Shoe Laces – $2](. Again, we must dress conservatively. I add my own style flair by swapping out my brown shoe’s laces with dark blue, maroon, or purple. They’re noticeable if you’ve been flying together with someone for a couple of days but not noticeable enough to catch someone’s eye in passing. Pro Tip #5: [Napkin Holder – $8](. Inevitably you hit turbulence midair just as you were taking a bite out of your sandwich or slurping your tomato bisque. While kind of juvenile in appearance, this chain keeps my napkin in place so I don’t stain my shirt and tie. If you want to take this for a spin (or try the home version! We’re still taking [What I wore Today Working from Home submissions](), send an email to joe@dappered.com with who you are, what you do, and what you’d like to submit. To be featured, we’ll need a picture of you at work, as well as the details on what you’re wearing/usually wear on the job. Final image will have to be cropped down to 1500×840 pixels, so, keep that in mind when shooting. Landscape mode please, and let’s keep anything from the chin up out of it, since our eventual robot overlords will one day scalp the web for faces that they can scan and plaster onto their metallic skulls to increase their “trustworthiness.” Note that sending an email with your picks and a pic doesn’t guarantee publishing. We gotta have some variety, y’know? That’ll help your chances. But be yourself. And get your employer’s permission if you’re gonna get specific with your place of work. If you get fired, that’s on you. Good luck. Tech-Pant (noun): A type of men’s casual trouser which uses scientifically-developed fabrics to provide moisture-wicking properties, breathability, ease of movement, and an overall higher level of comfort compared to all-cotton or mostly cotton traditional alternatives. Made for year-round use, these types of pants are especially favored during the hotter months, as they are particularly adept at preventing conditions such as “crotch-rot”, “monkey butt” and “swamp ass”.  And here are ten of the best… [#1. Banana Republic Aiden Slim Fit Core Temp Chino – $50ish]( ($98) Size shown: 34×30 slim fit on 5’10” / 195 Pros: All around greatness here. Still the champ. Lots of colors. Often/always on sale. Relatively affordable due to the bang-for-the-buck factor. You get a LOT for your money. Lightweight fabric that breathes, moves great, and doesn’t make the “swish swish” sound. Partially cotton, so looks more like a real chino than cheaper alternatives, but still super lightweight and flexible. Cons: Continues to only be available in one fit… slim. No athletic tapered yet. Which is super frustrating for the thicker legs crowd. [#2. Lululemon Warpstreme ABC or Commission Pant – $128](1100l8fEx/destination:https%3A%2F%2Fshop.lululemon.com%2Fsearch%3FNtt%3Dwarpstreme%2520men%2527s%2520pants) 1100l8fEx/destination:https%3A%2F%2Fshop.lululemon.com%2Fsearch%3FNtt%3Dwarpstreme%2520men%2527s%2520pants Size Shown: 33×30 classic fit Commission Pant on 5’10” / 190 Pros: Would have been #1 except for how much they cost. Flat out fantastic in every other metric. Multiple fits (and the fit is superb). Plenty of colors. Available in either a true-chino style (commission), or 5-pocket style (ABC). The fabric is downright perfect. Incredibly comfortable. They breathe, they stretch, they move with you, they wick… all of it. AND they don’t make the “swish swish” sound cheaper tech pants make. Cons: The price. Good grief the price. Lululemon absolutely makes you pay for it. These darn things are EXPENSIVE. Plus, secret’s out on them. They’re often sold out in common inseam lengths (30″ and 32″). Also, I’ve found that the ABC pant (5-pocket style) fits looser than the more traditional, chino-style Commission pants. I wear a 32 in the ABC, and 33 in the Commission. Both classic fits with a 30″ inseam. [#3. J. Crew Tech Pant – $40ish]( ($79.50) Pros: Can drop to dirt cheap prices. Super lightweight, great stretch, and very comfy, just like [the shorts version](. Available in their 484 slim, or their 770 straight. A 33×30 in the 770 works great on my 5’9″/190 – 195 lb frame. Or, at least they did. I can’t find ’em right now. We recently downsized and they must be in a box somewhere. Bottom line: [I can’t find my pants](. Drat. Cons: Does make the “Swish Swish” sound when you walk. Also, J. Crew’s pricing/promo calendar has these things all over the place. Sometimes they’re $50+, [sometimes they’re $25](. So, you have to wait and play the game. [#4. Target Goodfellow & Co Slim Fit Tech Chino – $29.99]( Size Shown: 33×30 slim fit on 5’10” / 190 Pros: A cheaper version of the BR Core Temp. Fabric isn’t quite as good (not as lightweight, but not heavyweight either). But it’s mostly cotton (the rest being nylon and spandex) and looks and feels more like chino than tech-wear. Waist band has an interior drawstring for a super precise fit. Nicely inexpensive. Does go on sale from time to time, not always, but sometimes. Cons: Just available in their slim fit. Only four colors to choose from, but they’re the foundation shades most guys reach for. That interior drawstring, while easy to cut out if you don’t like it, might bug some all the same. [#5. Bonobos Highland Golf Pant – $39.20]( w/ EPICSALE ($128) Size Shown: 32×30 athletic fit on 5’10” / 190 Pros: A true tech pant, BUT… no “swish swish”. Fabric is excellent. Almost a tech… oxford? Or a tech pique? If such a thing can exist. Lots of fits too. You’re covered if you don’t skip leg day. Made for the course, so, you could walk 18 holes (or the equivalent of such) in these. Cons: When they’re not on sale (which is the case for all but two colors right now), they’re just flat out expensive. Meanwhile, they have [four ventilation holes in the nether regions](. Some will love that feature. Some will hate it. [#6. Old Navy Slim Go-Dry Built-In Flex Performance Pants – $30ishÂ]( [Dappered.com]( Size Shown: 36×32 slim fit on 5’11″ / 195 Pros: Cheeeeap. All polyester, and while they look like poly tech pants, they also look like work pants. Neither matted nor overly shiny, so you can wear them to work and replace the office water cooler jug without worrying about ripping them. Slim but not so slim that you have to skip leg day. Cons: They do make the “swish swish” sound. Also, pockets are an odd-mish mash of styles. Welt pockets in the back, but scooped jean-style pockets up front? Kinda odd. [#7. Target All in Motion Men’s Golf Pants – $40]( [In Review: Target's New All In Motion Activewear Line | Dappered.com]( Size Shown: 32×30 on 5’6″ / 160 Pros: Pretty close replicas / homages to the Bonobos “[Lightweight 5-Pocket Golf Pants](,” but for less than half the $98 asking price. The same 5-pocket layout with jeans-style pockets on the back. Same reinforced back knee seams for when you hunch over your putt on the green. [Double-closure waistband]( that buttons and slides. Flex is great too. Cons: Doesn’t seem to go on sale that often. Plus, Target has been having a really hard time keeping things in stock lately. Sizes are pretty scattered. And who knows when they’ll be back in full stock (or, if they’ll be back in full stock). [#8. Bonobos Lightweight Chinos – $35.20]( w/ EPICSALE ($98) Size Shown: 34 x 30 athletic fit on 5’10” / 195 Pros: Mostly cotton that feels and seems to act more like a true lightweight chino than any sort of tech pant. 62% Cotton, 24% Polyester, 12% Rayon, and 2% Spandex. Lightweight for sure. Tech? Not so much. They do well in the heat, but I wouldn’t say they’re as good at wicking and air flow as a more true tech pant would be. Cons: When full price (which many of the color options are stuck at right now), it’s just flat out better to go with BR’s Core Temp. Unless you can’t get in BR’s Aiden Slim fit. [#9. Amazon Essentials Men’s Slim-fit Stretch Golf Pant – $27]( Size Shown: 33×30 on 5’10” / 190 Pros: Surprisingly not bad! Nice slim fit, five colors to choose from, fabric is soft and smooth. Kinda-sorta-maybe a super-budget “warpstreme” from lululemon? Okay, not that nice, but still, not bad! 98% poly, but no “swish swish” sound when you walk. Cons: That permanent front crease down each leg is a bit budget country club looking. Reminds too many of us of bad school uniform chinos. Fabric does claim to be “performance” and moisture wicking, but it has a little bit of a circa 1997 “microfiber” feel to it. Doesn’t feel as airy as they other options on this list. [#10. Kuhl Silencr Pant in Carbon – $85]( Size Shown: Medium on 5’7″ / 175 Pros: True hiking pants. So… kind of an outlier on this list. BUT! Made in a technical stretch fabric for keeping you secure and comfortable on the trail. UPF 50 for extra protection and water-repellant fabric when you have to cross a stream. These won’t be confused for a pair of chinos, but the first review on page says it best,” These are hiking pants that don’t look like hiking pants.” Cons: Styling. They might be one of the best hiking pants out there… but they’re still a hiking pant. Not gonna look right in the boardroom or on a date. Unless that meeting or that date is happening at the top of a mountain. And if it is? Lucky you! BONUS Your favorite year-round wool trousers (suit or stand alone) Pros: If you own [a year-round, basic wool suit](, then you already own these things. No extra buying needed! Wool is nature’s tech fabric. It breathes, it wicks, it’s super comfortable. That, and it resists wrinkling better than most cotton and linen pants. Cons: Wearing suit pants separate from the jacket, with some frequency, will cause the trousers to wear out faster than the jacket. Solution? [Suit up]( Wear that jacket too. Just make sure it’s lined in something somewhat breathable like Bemberg, or only quarter lined (or not lined at all!) in the back. Don’t get heat stroke out there. Also receiving votes: The [Proof Nomad Pant from Huckberry]( (slim or straight fit, lots of great colors, no swish sound, but no choosing the inseam). The [Rhodes Commuter]( (lululemon competitor… so spendy, but lots of colors, multiple fits and colors, and they’re not sold out like the lululemon options). And [Nordstrom’s Tech Smart 5-Pocket Performance pants]( (no swish swish, $40, ships and returns for free). Big thanks to Billy B. and Dan W. for the tips!!
