Welcome to â[What I Wore Today Working from Home.](â AKA, WIWTWFH (pronounced: wee-WIT-wu-fuh). A series on, you guessed it, who wears what to work, when working, or NOT working, from home. Yâknow, to help put you in the right frame of mind for your work (day job or self-improvement) when stuck inside for the next few weeks. Would you like to be featured? See the bottom of this post for instructions.
About the Author: Matt T. is a 6th grade Science Teacher in Sarasota, Fl. When he’s not teaching tiny humans about the Paleocene epoch, he enjoys reading, playing elder scrolls online, and has been attempting to go to local art galleries enough for them to know his name. He has succeeded with 4 of the 30-ish so far.

The Suit: [J. Crew “Unsuit” Seersucker Jacket]( & [Matching Pants – $328 total]( First, a point of order. The younger generation has a bizarre tendency to call ANY jacket and trouser combination “a suit.” I wear sportcoats a lot. And even when my sportcoat or blazer is in obvious contrast to my pair of pants, they’ll STILL say “Nice Suit Mr. Teacher Man!” My students and I are trying to work through this together, but I have bad news guys. It’s not going well. You think [the oxford vs. derby]( confusion is bad? In about 8 years, no one will know what a suit is anymore.
Anyway. I can’t say enough nice things about the J Crew unstructured line of sportcoats/suits. They breathe well enough to wear in the summer, even down here in Florida. Somehow, despite their complete lack of construction, they still tend to come-off a bit polished. Yes, a full seersucker suit can look like a costume, but it’s an awesome costume. Culturally speaking, the coast of southern Florida has about as much in common with the “Deep South” as a Coney Island hotdog, but it’s still the deep south. So, I get to wear seersucker.
The Shirt: [Amazon “Buttoned Down” Brand Slim Fit Supima Non Iron Dress Shirt – $39](. The relative cost, speed of delivery, and convenience of Amazon’s house brand “Buttoned Down” is hard to beat. I know [we have a lot of “Goodthreads” fans here](, but [the Buttoned Down line]( has slightly nicer fabrics, and they have sleeve length options in 1″ increments. Not bad. The collars are small, so I’d advise choosing the “spread collar” option to mitigate that shortcoming as much as possible.
The Tie:Â [TheTieBar Paisley Tie – $25](//www.thetiebar.com/product/TIE-4754-0004). I love paisley, but it can be garish. I can’t bring myself to wear a paisley shirt. A paisley tie, however, is a good way to introduce a little whimsy without looking like you’re trying too hard. Because I’m teaching 6th graders. I have to keep their attention/have some fun.
The Shoes: [Brooks Brothers Goodyear Welted White Bucks – $178](//www.brooksbrothers.com/Classic-Bucks/MH00338,default,pd.html) ($248). Bucks are wildly versatile, and they come in a rainbow of colors, but white bucks are the OG of the style. A well made pair of white bucks (not sand, not bone, but white) is surprisingly tricky to find. Brooks Brothers is one of the few places that seems to have them on a consistent basis. Yay Americana.
The Pocket Square: [Bonobos T-Rex Pocket Square – $33.75]( w/ PICKMEUP ($55). Dress for the occasion. We’re currently on the Mesozoic era.
The Lightsaber: [Hasbro Anakin to Darth Ultimate FX Lightsaber – $74.99](. I need to point to stuff on the whiteboard, and I wanted something with some gravitas. A lightsaber was, of course, the obvious solution. I bought mine at a books-a-million circa 2005, so I can’t speak directly to this current version.
This is Seven of Nine. She’s more Bag than Borg.Resistance is feowtile.
Want to submit your own WIWTWFM? Send an email to joe@dappered.com with who you are, what you do, and what youâd like to submit. And no, you donât have to actually be working. There are plenty of jobs on standby right now whose workers canât do the work from home. Iâm not gonna discriminate. Thatâd be dumb. Now, to be featured, weâll need a picture of you at home (at work, or not) as well as the details on what youâre wearing. Final image will have to be cropped down to 1500Ã840 pixels, so, keep that in mind when shooting. Landscape mode please, and letâs keep anything from the chin up out of it. Note that sending an email with your picks and a pic doesnât guarantee publishing. We gotta have some variety, yâknow? Thatâll help your chances. Letâs keep it âDappered.â But be yourself. Pics of pets always help too. Good luck. Weâll be in touch.

What are you going to wear? Sometimes itâs good to look at a few suggestions then add your own tweaks and ideas. Thatâs what these are for. Before anyone gets [their boxer jocks](//www.underarmour.com/en-us/mens-ua-tech-3-boxerjock/pid1332662-001) in a twist, no one is suggesting [you do yardwork in a suit](. What is being suggested, is that if you’re lucky enough to be “WFH”, dress like circumstances were normal at least once or twice a week. Succumbing to an all-sweatpants-all-the-time life will only get you left in the dust, once this cloud lifts. Seriously. [Good luck to those who are sartorially surrendering](. They’re gonna need it. Picks below are to lock you into focus for a big presentation or meeting over video. This style scenario is for a suit and tie workplace. We’ll cover business casual & casual workplaces in upcoming posts.Â
[Style Scenario: Enclothed Cognition - Working From Home, Suited Up | Dappered.com]
The Suit: [Spier & Mackay Charcoal Gray Suit â $246]( w/ SALE25 ($328). Yes, a suit at home. Read the intro. Look, it’s not conventional, but nothing is at present. If you have a big moment in your career on the horizon – a presentation, pitch, interview, or other high stakes event- staying suited will keep you focused. It’s in these scenarios that doing whatever you can to create the right mindset will better position you for success. Enter: the power suit. Super affordable (especially now with the 25% off), high quality, and comfortable for wearing all day.
The Shirt: [Charles Tyrwhitt Button Down Collar Shirt in White â $31.96]( w/ HOP2IT ($40). A button down collar is more than fine here, especially if you opt to go without a tie. E-commerce sales are plentiful, and Charles Tyrwhitt is no exception. What was once a great deal (4 for $199) has become even better. Use code HOP2IT for 20% off.
The Shoes: [Allen Edmonds Fifth Avenue in Coffee w/ Dainite Sole – $275]( ($425). Much like the case for wearing a suit at home, I recommend lacing up your shoes for all the same reasons. Wearing the suit and donning a pair of slippers defeats the purpose of the suit. Make sure your shoes match the attitude you’re working to build in for the day. Very much on sale thanks to their Anniversary Event, the Fifth Avenue’s will do you right both now and when you eventually get back to your office building. Expensive, but they’re built to last and will eventually mold to your foot, creating a truly unique to the wearer fit. Exceptional. Out of your price range? Try [these Italian Made cap toes in Dark brown from DSW](. They’re [currently on mega sale](.
The Belt: [Banana Republic Italian Leather Belt in Burgundy – $26.77]( ($59.50). A gorgeous shade of redddish brown, and at $30, a downright steal.
The Watch:Â Â [Orient Kamasu Blue Dial – $250](. Watches are just about completely unnecessary at the home office with regards to functionality, but it’s perhaps that exact reason that a nice watch will keep the professionalism, motivation and focus high throughout the day. Orient hits on all the proper, classic dive-watch notes at relatively affordable price with the Kamasu. This might be heresy, but I prefer this model to their long-running Mako line. *GASP*
The Socks: [Banana Republic Dot Cluster Sock in Blue – $6]( ($14.50). If wearing a suit at home isn’t a call for “fun socks”, then I don’t know what is. Six bones. Yay.
The Tie: [The Tie Bar Dotted Tie in Navy “Paisley Riot” Chambray – $20](//www.thetiebar.com/product/TIE-4827-0251) w/ WFH20 ($25). Depending upon whether or not video conferencing is at play, you may opt to go tieless. That said, wearing a tie is the pièce de résistance of the formal work from home outfit. But since you’re at home, have some fun with it. This thing is a matte linen/silk chambray-like fabric (which is right-on for spring), and the pattern is literally called “Paisley Riot.” Sounds like a hoot, and looks like it’ll perfectly walk the line between dressed up yet not stuffy.
The Pocket Square: [Made in Italy Wool Pocket Square in “rust” – $29.99]( ($45). Not cheap. Not cheap at all. But it kinda sorta looks really good. Plus, if you pick up a second square in a different color (like navy) and use the code RAINBOW at checkout, your total for TWO squares comes to $35. Shipping is a steep $8 though.

[BIGDEAL = 40% off sitewide at DSW](
[Vittorio Russo](. Any direct experience? Nope. But for forty bucks, AND free outbound shipping, AND if (key word: if) they’re comparable to the nice quality of their also made in Italy brother brand [Mercanti Fiorentini](, then the risks seem pretty low.
- [Made in Italy Vittorio Russo Cap Toe Oxfords in Dark Brown â $41.98]( ($199.99)
- [Puma Super Liga OG Retro Sneaker â $35.99](liga/) ($59.99)
- [Made in Italy Vittorio Russo Wingtips â $41.98]( ($199)Â
- [Blake McKay Cap Toe Oxfords – $41.98]( ($109) not made in Italy. shown at top of post though.
- [Warfield & Grand Valley Chukka – $32.98]( ($120) these might run a touch narrow?
- [Made in Italy Mercanti Fiorentini Double Monks in Cognac or Black â $34.99]( ($159.99)Â
- [New Balance 009 Sneakers – $38.99]( ($64.98)Â but [they offer a lot of support](.
- [Cole Haan Johnson Grand 3.60 Double Monks – $53.98]( ([$140 – $300](
- [Clarks Bushacre 2 – $42.59]( ($70.99)
Returns will cost you [a pre-paid $8.50 label](. You’ve got 60 days [90 days]( to get them back. Sadly, I wouldn’t count on getting them to a physical DSW store in that time frame.
Also… the rest of their site is 40% off.
I mean, [what are are we talking about here](.
Nothing is risk/cost free in life. But if you’re looking to spin the wheel of weirdly inexpensive shoes, DSW seems to be barking, once again, “Step right up.”
Expect sizes to move pretty fast?
That’s all.
Carry on.
UPDATE: Big thanks to Jason F. who owns [the Vittorio Russo cap toes]( and had this to say about the quality and fit:
“It’s forty bucks for a pair of shoes I could get away with wearing to a board presentation and not feel worried about them falling apart, squeaking, or looking like they cost $40.Â
If you’re even considering a pair of dress shoes at that price point my bet is that you’re going to be plenty satisfied (assuming they fit). They do run narrow, so size up a half for regular Joes and a full size if you take an E width normally is my advice. I take a 10.5D in AE’s 65 last and was just barely able to squeeze into a 10.5 for the Russo’s. They are sized similar to Mercanti, which also run a bit on the sleeker side..
I will add that as a positive over Mercanti is the rubbery sole (Mercanti uses a smooth hard sole). Yes it is stitched but it’s going to hold up to the elements and provide some needed grip. These will work as beaters during wet/ugly weather, without me worrying about slipping everywhere or tearing up the bottom. Value!”
Thank you Jason!!
