What are you going to wear? Sometimes itâs good to look at a few suggestions then add your own tweaks and ideas. Thatâs what these are for. Dressing right for an interview can be tricky. You want to look your best, but you don’t want to go over the top. That’s why we’re going to cover the three basic dress-codes for interviews. Dressed up (today), Smart Casual, and Casual. A good rule of thumb is to dress better than you’d have to if you landed the gig, but you also want to avoid looking like you’re showing off. Sharp, but appropriate. Neither too sloppy, nor too cavalier. Below is one option for an interview at a white collar/dressed up workplace, that’ll help you nail the look, and the job.
[Style Scenario: What to wear to a dressed up job interview | Dappered.com]
The Suit: [SuitSupply Pure Wool S110âs Napoli Dark Grey Suit – $400]( SuitSupply is one of the pioneers of affordable high-style. Crafted with fabrics from storied Italian mills, when you buy a suit from this outfit ([thank you, thank you](), high-quality products are unlocked for a relative bargain. Opt for something classic and conservative, but in a contemporary (not trendy tight) fit. The charcoal color lends itself to flexibility in a variety of future uses, while the fit helps you stand out from the crowd.
The Shoes: [Allen Edmonds Park Ave in Coffee – $395](. Allen Edmonds, over 100 years old, is one of the definitive American made menswear brands. Their shoes are expensive, no doubt, but the longevity they provide means no worrying about what to lace up for this interview. Or the next one. Or the one after that. Because weâre talking investment-worthy pieces, choose brown over black; youâll get more use in more scenarios. And while most men will choose black, you’re not headed to a funeral. This is the birth of your new career! Brown CAN go great with charcoal, and if anyone notices that you look slightly different, it’ll be for a good reason. They might not even realize why.
The Shirt: [Charles Tyrwhitt Spread Collar Non-Iron Herringbone Shirt in White – 4 for $199](//www.ctshirts.com/us/spread-collar-non-iron-herringbone-shirt----white/FON0677WHT.html?q=spread%20collar%20herringbone*&qc=2&searchtype=range). Skip the button down collars here. Those are traditionally “sport” shirts, and no buttons on the collar are the right play. Spread collars provide a modern flair to perhaps the most classic piece in all of menâs style -the white dress shirt â while staying expertly formal. This, along with the subtle herringbone pattern, gives you a shirt that is a cut above most other options. It’s Charles Tyrwhitt, so bulk buys and watching for sales is the way to go.
The Tie Bar: [Silver Shot Tie Bar – $15](//www.thetiebar.com/product/C736). Functional, classic, and one of those items that’s just different enough that it’ll help you stand out quietly. Plus, if it’s an interview over lunch, it’ll help keep your tie out of your soup.
The Tie: [The Tie Bar Mini-dot Tie in Navy – $25](//www.thetiebar.com/product/32364). For an interview, you want something basic, not âshouty.â This is a professional setting in which youâre trying to secure a job, not a phone number at happy hour. A subtle dotted pattern strikes the perfect balance of basic and memorable. Because the watch pick below is blue, weâll match. On that noteâ¦
The Watch: [Christopher Ward C6 Trident Pro 600 – $895](. The statement piece. A well-made, clean tool watch is a great timepiece to wear for an interview. Dress watches are, obviously, more dressed up (and feel free to wear one here) but in an outfit that is otherwise understated, having one item that stands out while still being perfectly appropriate for the entire ensemble will go a long way for your overall aesthetic.
The Belt: [Banana Republic Italian Leather Belt in Brown â $44](. Think of this as the more polished version of the reliable [GAP basic leather belt](.
The Socks: [Nordstrom Merino Wool Blend Dress Sock in Charcoal â 3 pairs for $40]( Being an interview, there is a decent likelihood you have some level of nerves as you wait to head in to speak with the interviewer. Keeping your feet cool with temperature-regulating, lightweight wool will keep you fresh for your big moment.
The Briefcase: [Allen Edmonds Fulton Slim Leather Case – $269.97]( ($450). Slim, neutral, and timeless. No backpacks. No true messengers that you have to sling over your head. You want to look like a pro, but not dated and stuffy. This briefcase hits all the right points. Was just on sale for an additional 25% off too, so you could nab it for cheaper in the future.

As much as this website [encourages]( people to [disconnect](, podcasts are one of those things that are an exception to that rule. Theyâre incredible. And they can make the mundane ([doing laundry](, riding the bus, [ironing]( or [shining shoes]() nothing short of extraordinary. Each month our resident podcast connoisseur, [Dave I.](, finds three podcasts worth your time and ears.Â
[Sports Wars](
[Sports Wars podcast](
A variation of the [Business Wars]( podcast, Sports Wars is a podcast dedicated to rivalries in sport. When the recommendation for this podcast first came across my feed, I was skeptical. Sure there have been great rivalries in sport – Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier immediately jumps to my mind. But would the topics be diverse enough to sustain my interest in the long term? I need not have worried. Hosted by Dan Rubenstein, Sports Wars covers rivalries across the sporting spectrum. Football, tennis, basketball, college sports, baseball, boxing, the list goes on and on. There is no shortage of stories to cover. The January 8, 2020 series “[Brady vs. Manning]( was an interesting listen, as was the September 25, 2019 series of “[Tyson vs. Holyfield](.
[Nutrition Diva](
[Nutrition Diva Podcast](
New year, new approach to eating. That was my motto starting January 1, 2020, and I knew I could not do it alone. Enter the Nutrition Diva podcast hosted by Monica Reinagel. Monica’s podcast is perfect for anyone who wants to learn about eating better without getting caught up in the weeds of the latest diet trend. As someone who struggles with eating too much sweet/sugary food and not enough healthy food, Episode #544 from December 17, 2019 “[A Better Approach to Personalized Nutrition](” was exactly what I needed. Monica explained why people crave the food that they do, and how a personalized approach to eating is more likely to deliver the dietary results I am looking for. I also exercise regularly and consume electrolyte drinks like they are going out of style. But are those drinks actually doing me any good? Episode #541 from September 17, 219 “[When are Sports Drinks Necessary?](“, with guest speaker Dr. Kelly Pritchett, addresses this question and others related to sports nutrition. After listening to this episode I am paying closer attention to what sports drinks I consume. Finally, with all of the media coverage of meat alternatives, I had to give episode #473 from July 2, 2019 “[Is The Beyond Burger Healthy for You?](” a listen. Can’t say the episode changed my mind, but I am better informed.
[StarTalk Radio](
[Star Talk Podcast](
Neil deGrasse Tyson first came across my radar when I read his book [Astrophysics for People in a Hurry](. I learned a lot from Neil’s approach to teaching complicated theories, so I was very happy to learn Neil also has a podcast. StarTalk Radio features Neil and a variety of guests who discuss astronomy, physics, and other topics in a fun and friendly environment. If all of my teachers approached learning like Neil does, I think I would have found school a lot more fun. As an avid reader, “[Solving Crimes with Science, with Patricia Cornwell](” from September 20, 2019 was a fun listen with Ms. Cornwell explaining how she brings science in to her crime stories. The same can be said for “[Westworld and the Future of AI, with James Marden](” from September 6, 2019. After listening to the show, I went back and watched one or two Westworld shows from a different perspective. Lastly, with the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 occurring last year, the July 19, 2019 episode “[Apollo and the Future of Humans in Space](” did a good job of explaining the challenges of prolonged space flight, why we haven’t returned to the moon, and what the future of the space program holds.

Per [Yahoo Finance]( (and PRNewswire), over 80% of consumers received a gift card during the 2019 holiday season, while gift card sales were up seven percent over 2018âs totals. Iâd be willing to bet that a large percentage of us Dappered readers received some of that fantastic plastic. In this new series titled [How to Spend It](, weâre curating a bunch of items from a selection of stores you might/most likely got a gift card to (some very Dappered-y, some less so because Aunt Karen wasnât sure). Our goal is to show you whatâs worth it at various price points. You CAN spend it all in one place, dear!
Brand Note: So, uh, hello everyone. My name is Adam and I am a J.Crew addict. Weâre gathered here today so that I can show you a few examples of why J.Crew is, and has been, my go-to clothing brand since ~2012. Sure, theyâve been through their fair share of ups and downs over the past few years, but I believe theyâve turned a corner and have cleared some of those quality and price hurdles. You can see some of these changes for yourself if you know what to look for: new labels and tags, better materials, and *slightly* more competitive pricing (believe it or not). Always keep your eyes peeled for their frequent 30-50% off coupons (prices below don’t reflect additional discounts, being that J. Crew cycles through promos so fast) and as usual⦠specific pricing, sizes, and availability will often vary greatly, so check your local store or online frequently for the best deals!
Pricing Note: As of post time (2/18/20) J. Crew is running a 30% off select full price, and an additional 50% – 60% off select sale items code WEEKEND. That hasn’t been taken into account below, being that promos turn over quick at J. Crew, and things live forever on the internet. So… Hooray if you get a big discount!
Under $50
[J. Crew]
- [Garment-dyed slub cotton crewneck T-shirt – $32.50](
- [Slim garment-dyed slub jersey polo shirt – $39.50](
- [English linen pocket square – $42](
- [Garment-dyed slub cotton Henley shirt – $42.50](
- [Slim stretch pique polo shirt – $39.50]( ($45)
- [Cotton crewneck sweater in garter stitch – $49.50](
TONS of goodies available under $50, especially if youâre willing to wait for one of the semi-frequent 40% off sales. Iâm a big fan of [the garment dyed slub cotton tees]( and snap them up whenever theyâre on sale. [The white linen pocket square]( is THE one to own as it goes with practically every suit and sport coat!
Under $100
- [Classic denim jacket – $98](
- [Slim American Pima cotton oxford shirt with mechanical stretch – $78](
- [Nike Killshot 2 sneakers – $90](
- [Adidas Stan Smith sneakers – $80](
- [484 Slim-fit pant in stretch chino – $79.50](
- [Slim stretch organic cotton chambray shirt in dark wash – $79.50](
- [Vans for J.Crew washed canvas authentic sneakers – $60](
- [9â stretch shorts – $65](
- [484 Slim-fit jean in stretch dark worn in Japanese denim – $98](
- [Slim American Pima cotton oxford shirt with mechanical stretch in mini check – $69.50](
If we’re honest, most of the J.Crew staples weâre familiar with are going to be in the $50-$100 MSRP range. Thatâs not exactly cheap, but frequent sales can slash the sticker shock a lot. Consider these the first big step up from your Old Navy, Target, or UNIQLO items where youâll notice the better fabrics, cuts, and construction. Iâm especially fond of [the chambray shirt]( [buffalo plaid Oxford]( and [stretch chinos](. I have subjected those to years of very, very frequent wears. The infamous Killshots are now in stock, too, but I prefer the white and green Stan Smiths.
Under $200
[J. Crew]
- [Field mechanic jacket – $198](
- [Everyday cashmere crewneck sweater – $118](
- [Wallace & Barnes Slim-fit chore blazer in cotton-linen – $150](
- [Bomber jacket in merino wool/cotton/poly blend – $128](

- [Brunswick rain jacket in camo – $148](
- [Blundstone 1911 boots – $185](
The sub-$200 tier is full of interesting jackets, cashmere sweaters, and some great Japanese denim. The Blundstone boots are great options for foul weather or just kicking around the yard with your little Gremlin. Donât be afraid to [throw this camo rain jacket]( in your style rotation â camo patterns are very âinâ so long as you wear them as your statement piece to add a pop of color to an otherwise basic, understated outfit.
Under $300
[J. Crew]
- [Ludlow Slim-fit unstructured blazer in American wool – $209]( in stores for more stock?
- [Kenton suede Chelsea boots – $248](

- [Kenton suede Pacer boots – $248](
- [Made in the USA New Balance 997 sneakers – $210](
- [Red Wing work chukka boots – $260](
Why $300? Itâs a great starting point for some nice Goodyear welted shoes or a staple sport coat. We previously reviewed [the unstructured wool/cotton jacket]( and I remember being super impressed with it. Seems like the holiday and post holiday sales crush have limited the stock on these things online as of post time, but you may have luck in store.
Under $500
[J. Crew]
- [Barbour Sylkoil Ashby jacket – $415](
- [Ludlow Slim-fit Legacy blazer in American wool – $350](
- [Grant Stone plain-toe boots – $370](
- [Grant Stone Traveler penny loafers – $320](
- [Ludlow topcoat in wool-cashmere – $498](
These are the stretch goals and luxury splurge pieces. Even if you didnât receive a gift card this large, maybe you want to make a sizeable dent in something thatâs considered âinvestmentâ worthy. Side note: I personally own [the Barbour Ashby jacket]( and itâs WORTH. IT. Spend a few extra bucks on the matching hood and youâll own this forever.
OVER $500
[J. Crew]
- [Single-breasted topcoat in camel hair – $1498](
- [Ludlow Traveler Slim-fit suit jacket]( + [pants in Italian wool]( = $700
- [Ludlow Slim-fit suit jacket with double vent]( + [pants in American wool]( = $650
- [Alden for J.Crew 405 Indy boots – $589](
- [Alden for J.Crew shell cordovan longwing bluchers – $790](
- [Alden for J.Crew shell cordovan cap-toe boots – $790](
If your wealthy boss [Bernie]( mysteriously kicks the bucket and youâre his sole heir, now would be a good time to consider updating some of your basics to some of these eye-wateringly expensive âgrail worthyâ pieces. Coat and suits can and will go on sale (although they’re often excluded). Aldens on the other hand? Yeah. Good luck with getting a promo code to apply to those.
