[Dan Henry 1963 Pilot Chronograph – $230](
About the author:Â Aaron K was first brought to Dappered by his love of watches, but has found it to be a great resource for so much more. When not reading Dappered, heâs usually relishing being a dad, spending time with his family & friends, learning about most anything that can fly, or taking photographs.
Iâm a sucker for a good chronograph, especially with a healthy dose of vintage styling in the mix. I donât own any vintage models, though, because they are increasingly expensive, are harder to guarantee as authentic, and will require sometimes costly servicing to stay, or even become, functional. Thatâs a pretty dicey combination when style and value are key. What to do?
Enter Dan Henry and his eponymous watch company. Henry is a watch collector (with a [website showcasing his collection]()) who seems to have recognized the problems facing the value-oriented vintage watch fan. He has released a range of reasonably-priced watches based directly on models from his collection, including the subject of this review: the [not-helpfully-named]( 1963 Pilot Chronograph.Â
[In Review: Dan Henry Watches (specifically the 1963 Pilot Chronograph) | Dappered.com](
42.5mm diameter and 22mm lug. Double Domed Crystal.
The 1963 can be had with a silver or black bezel, each selling for $230. To like the 1963, youâd better not mind homages too much, since both versions are ringers for a pair of 1960s [Breitling chronographs](. Naturally, the chronograph complication differs from the original. It isnât mechanical, but a Japanese Miyota 6S20 quartz chronograph. [Set it and forget it]( The central elapsed seconds hand moves smoothly, nicely belying the quartz underpinnings. The only quartz tip-off is the running seconds hand in the bottom sub-dial with the usual dead-seconds motion â but thankfully, no loud ticking, here.
With a 42.5mm diameter and 22mm lug width, the 1963 isnât small, but feels very light and wears nicely on my 7â wrist. A sapphire-coated, double-domed mineral crystal tops everything off, providing a great vintage look [with lovely edge distortion](. Water resistance is a good-enough 50m. The watch ships with an attractive leather strap, NATO strap, strap changing tool, and even a watch roll. The packaging is basic, but thatâs fine by me, since Iâd rather have my money go into the watch.
[In Review: Dan Henry Watches (specifically the 1963 Pilot Chronograph) | Dappered.com](
Miyota Quartz movement. Lots of different textures on the dial.
The 1963âs bezel is a 12-click, bidirectional 12 hour unit. The bezel looks great and is one of my favorite features of the 1963, but itâs where the low price shows most plainly. While itâs easy to display a second timezone with the bezel, it feels rather cheap. Also, the bezel has a bit of play and moves almost too easily from one position to the next. A firmer motion would be appreciated here.
The dial has an appealing mix of textures, colors, and layers. Part of the dialâs multi-layered look comes from its [sandwich]( construction, with cutouts for the hour markers exposing a layer of lume below. Thatâs a really nice detail at this price point. While Iâm generally ok with the en vogue faux-patina lume, if I have to be picky, the coloration used for the 1963 is a bit too yellow.

The SR-71 on the back of the Dan Henry 1963 Pilot.
Finally, the caseback. Good grief, itâs fantastic! Thereâs an [SR-71]( Blackbird embossed on the caseback, and itâs spectacular. Each Dan Henry model has a different caseback embossing, and that [Blackbird]( finally pushed me to proceed to checkout with the 1963. I still have yet to get a nice imprint of the SR-71 on my wrist, thoughâ¦
Sure, Iâd tweak a few things about the Dan Henry 1963, but as a whole package, and especially given the price, this is a great watch. The 1963 provides classic chronograph good looks (plus that fantastic caseback), uses a movement which wonât require expensive servicing and hides its quartz identity well, and does it all for an extremely palatable price. I think that Dan Henry has provided a great solution to the vintage + value watch dilemma.

[Banana Republic Slim Legacy Jeans – $58.80](//bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/search.do?searchText=legacy%20jeans) ($98)
About the Author: Brandon D. is a [recently married]( trial attorney living in Houston, TX (but will forever be a New Yorker). Brandon has been wearing a suit to work for the better part of a decade, so he appreciates the insights into quality-yet-affordable style options for which Dappered is known. When not at work, he enjoys traveling with his wife, lounging with his dog Charlie (sheâs half-Chihuahua/half-Dachshund, which has the added bonus of being known as a âChiweenieâ), and the weekly trip to Costco.
Note: This current 40% off for Labor Day promo ends today, 9/3. Two fits available here: Slim and Skinny. No Athletic Tapered yet. Jeans shown in this post are the “[Rinse Dark Wash](//bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=488602002&pcid=999).”
Like most people, I spend way too much time on the Internet. In my defense, most of that time is reading the news. But a lot of the remaining time is spent reading âthe newsâ AKA Twitter. Which, well. Yeah. That’s usually a net loss. But once in a while, the Twitter Machine isn’t a 100% waste of time, and I stumble across some relevant news about clothes. And recently, [I came across some coverage](Â of Banana Republicâs new Legacy Denim.
[Banana Republic Legacy Jeans](//bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/search.do?searchText=legacy%20jeans)
Multiple washes, available in slim or skinny fit.
Right off the bat, I was intrigued. Iâm a fan of BR as it is. I was also happy to see them using the eco-friendly product [TENCEL]( in making these jeans. Full disclosure: I know buying a certain pair of jeans is not the make or break move that slows climate change. But there are little things I can do, like opting for [slower]( and/or [paid shipping](, and this is one of those little (okay, microscopic) things.
Back to the jeans. Dappered is a style blog, after all. And [writing]( about [pants]( is what I do. Here, I wanted to find out if the Legacy jeans could stand up to BRâs supremely popular [Rapid Movement Denim](. Briefly, yes they can. Clocking in at $20 cheaper with similar stretch and eco-friendly materials, the Legacy jeans are a welcome addition to BRâs denim options. As for the specifics, see below ([and Jim Kâs helpful insights]().
[In Review: Banana Republic Legacy Jeans | Dappered.com](//bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/search.do?searchText=legacy%20jeans)
Size 35×32 on  5â11″, 195lbs.
Made from 78% cotton, 18% TENCEL[â¢] (lyocell), 3% elasterrell, 1% elastane, these have quite the stretch. Similar to the Rapid Movement Denim and Core Temp Chinos for sure. To me, there was a noticeable difference in the weight of these compared to the Rapid Movement. The Legacy jeans were just heavier. This is either good or bad. For me, I prefer lighter weight jeans (and pants in general). But thatâs because I run hot and live in Houston.
As for the fit, while many report them being a true slim, I actually felt that these do not put the âslimâ in slim fit. What they do, however, is allow guys with larger legs to enjoy the look of slim fit jeans without cutting off circulation to their feet. I think this is a good thing. So in terms of versatility, you could definitely wear these to your office for Casual Friday, as well as most date night and casual venue options.
[In Review: Banana Republic Legacy Jeans | Dappered.com](//bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/search.do?searchText=legacy%20jeans)
Quite the stretch. Those who like stretch, will dig them.
Those who are anti stretch, well… these have stretch.
The same goes for the feel. Despite the stretch, these feel like jeans. Because of the stretch, I suspect they will take little to no time to break in. Again, to me this is another good thing.
Now for the weird. If you have a standard size, you may need to size up in the waist and size down in the length. I ordered mine [during the big Friends and Family sale](, and I purchased both a pair of Legacy Denim, AND a pair of Rapid Movement Denim. I got my usual denim size of 34×32 [in the Rapid Movement Denim](//bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=488393002&pcid=999) and they were a perfect fit. Huzzah! Yay pants!
[In Review: Banana Republic Legacy Jeans | Dappered.com](//bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/search.do?searchText=legacy%20jeans)
Shown above: [Rapid Movement in “Bolt Wash”](//bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=488393002&pcid=999) on top of the new [Legacy Jeans in “Dark Rinse.”](//bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=488602002&pcid=999)Â
Both are 32 lengths. Notice the difference. Weird.
But because many have reported the Legacy as a true slim fit, I upped the waist on those to a 35 and got my normal length of 32. Same as the Rapid movement length. Sizing up was the right move for the waist. But for the length, the 32 for the Legacy Jeans was close to two inches longer than the same length in the Rapid Movement jeans. Who knows why, but if I reordered, I would definitely get a 35×30 for the Legacy. Maybe it was a one off goof, but it’s still worth a mention here. Be aware of that before you buy. Maybe (and this is total speculation) the new Legacy design tries to incorporate the fact that due to the selvage trend, a lot of guys are cuffing their jeans these days? These aren’t selvage of course. But perhaps that’s why they’re longer? Maybe?
Overall, if youâre looking for a new pair of slim fit jeans and youâre looking to do something ever so small to help the environment, these could be the jeans for you.
