[Huckberry: Rhodes âFelixâ Chukkas â $198](
About the Author:Â [Adam Terry]( is Dapperedâs resident shoe expert. Heâs a thirtysomething Technical Trainer in the heating and manufacturing industry. He enjoys bourbon, boots, sneakers, and raw denim. Heâs also a new dad!
Youâve probably seen a lot of products from online retailer Huckberry lately, and for good reason. Theyâre fighting for your hard-earned dollars in this constantly shifting middle tier â you know, between cheap fast fashion retailers and those higher end menswear boutiques. Guys looking for an upgrade that used to shop at J.Crew, Club Monaco, etc. are now looking at online retailers that offer clothing and shoes with good materials, good construction, and good designs.
Huckberryâs in-house brand Rhodes is killing it with their casual and rugged, yet polished [line up of plain toe, cap toe, and chukka boots](. Letâs take a look at their Felix chukkas.

Sleeker than desert boots. Still plenty versatile.
Ordering/Delivery:
Huckberryâs shipping department is on fire lately. These were ordered on a Wednesday and arrived on my doorstep via FedEx on Friday. Two day shipping is pretty great. YMMV of course.
[In Review: The Huckberry Rhodes Felix Chukka Boot | Dappered.com](
Nice box. Nice materials. Nice boots!
Packaging:
The Felix chukkas arrived in a pretty nice navy box with gold embossing. Inside, I was pleasantly surprised to find a single large cotton shoe bag that wasnât mentioned on Huckberryâs site. I did not get a second set of laces and those were mentioned online.
First Impressions:
On the business to casual scale, the Felix chukkas fit somewhere on the more formal side of business casual. Unlike more casual desert boots or sneaker chukka hybrids, the gently rounded toe and two-eyelet upper has a taller, sleeker, and more structured look. The Portuguese-sourced calf suede is plush and buttery smooth; I love this punch of visible texture.
[In Review: The Huckberry Rhodes Felix Chukka Boot | Dappered.com](
Impressive suede uppers. Sleek looking silhouette without being pointy.
The dark brown welt and Blake-stitched black rubber studded sole add some visual weight below, anchoring the boots firmly in the âbusiness casualâ territory. Speaking of that rubber studded sole, itâs essentially a budget version of the venerable Dainite sole that most top tier makers use. It adds a ton of traction in less-than-ideal conditions while also remaining slim enough to not look too chunky. If you end up wearing through the sole or heel, they can easily be replaced by a skilled local cobbler.
[In Review: The Huckberry Rhodes Felix Chukka Boot | Dappered.com](
Comfort is entirely subjective, but I find the dark brown leather lining and leather wrapped insole to be pretty comfortable. I normally shy away from Blake/Rapid stitched shoes because I can feel the stitching around the inside of the toe box when Iâm walking. For me, itâs like walking around with sand in your shoes and you canât shake it out. The Felix chukkas solve this annoyance by wrapping the non-removable insole in leather. Walking around the house with and without socks, I have no discomfort at all.
[In Review: The Huckberry Rhodes Felix Chukka Boot | Dappered.com](
Comfy, leather wrapped insole.
Fit and Sizing:
The Felix Chukka fits about a half-size large, so take a half-size down from your âTrue to Sizeâ Brannock measurement. A 10 fits me like a 10 in most dress shoes. Note: If you have notably wide feet, you may want to a size up as these run just a touch narrow. For reference, I am a 10.5 D/E on a Brannock device and usually take a 10 D in most dress shoes, including Aldenâs Barrie last. I take a 10.5 E in Allen Edmonds 65 last, as that last runs narrow and I have slightly high arches. I also take an 11 in most Adidas or Nike sneakers.
[In Review: The Huckberry Rhodes Felix Chukka Boot | Dappered.com](
Size down by half a size if you’re a normal width.
Rubber studded sole provides traction, while remaining subtle.
A Few Words on Quality:
Overall quality â design, comfort, materials, construction, etc. â gets a solid A+ in my book. There were no noticeable issues aside from some flat spots in the suede that buffed out with a horsehair brush and some elbow grease. One sole had a broken stitch, but that was cleaned up with a quick snip with scissors.
[In Review: The Huckberry Rhodes Felix Chukka Boot | Dappered.com](
A+ on the quality front.Â
Final Thoughts:
If youâre looking for a super versatile pair of boots that can pair with anything you can throw at them, I highly recommend that you try the Rhodes Felix chukka boots from Huckberry. If youâre a fan of the âOakâ (aka snuff) suede, [try pairing them with dark denim](, a chambray button-down collar shirt, and an olive green Harrington or [M-65 style jacket](. If youâre looking for something slightly dressier, opt for the âRustâ dark brown leather and pair those with some birdseye or twill textured slacks, [an Oxford cloth button-down collar shirt](, and [a dark navy sport coat](.

Music is a little like [food]( and clothes. These are areas where itâs probably worthwhile for one to explore & expand their tastes. The Playlist is assembled each month by [Dapperedâs very own music correspondent]( Tim Johnstone. Tim is a former Virgin Records Label Rep & current award winning Program Director at [KRVB](, which was awarded the FMQB AAA station of the year markets 50+. You can also catch his work on Fridays when he assembles [the Weekend Reset](. Got a Spotify account? Youâll find a link to this monthâs playlist at the end of the post.
[Brittany Howard – “Stay High”](
Brittany Howard has stepped aside from the guys in Alabama Shakes. For now. She has been spending time with various side projects and now she has focused on music for her debut solo record. This is a glorious bit of soul from a woman who continues to impress with every project. This is simply fantastic.
[Elbow – “Dexter & Sinister”](
Welcome back lads. Following up on their 2017 album Little Fictions, British art-rockers return with a deep, dark and brooding track which rumbles and growls and swoops and shines over the course of 7 minutes and change. Joining the band is American folk singer/songwriter Jesca Hoop. Elbow doesn’t do anything subtly. They connect with every song and this one carries a particular punch.
[Tool – “Fear Inoculum”](
Thirteen years is a long time to wait for new music from any artist. For those fans of Tool, it seemed exceedingly painful. That wait is over, as the band has released their first single from the upcoming album. “Fear Inoculum” has been very well received by fans and critics alike and has already notched one [chart statistic of note](. This is absolutely terrific prog-metal and bodes well for the new album.
[DJ Shadow – “Rocket Fuel” featuring De La Soul](
Oh hell yeah! I’m gonna find some fanny packs and hyper-color t-shirts and rock the beats like it’s 1993, because this is the jam. It’s ok to dance like nobody is watching but it’s better if nobody is actually watching.
[Clairo – “Bags”](
Lovely lo-fi bedroom pop. Don’t underestimate just how infectious this can be. Clairo’s sound may be low-key but she spent time on the road opening for Khalid’s arena tour. She has a good chance of being the latest female pop star you hadn’t heard of, except now you do.
[White Reaper – “Might Be Right”](
Fuck yeah. Rock and Roll that has swagger and has fun in the process. More of this please!
[Chance The Rapper – “All Day Long”](
I’ve already shared my appreciation for the new full-length album from Chance The Rapper. I’ve chosen a couple tracks this month which stand out, including this track featuring John Legend.
[Wilco – “Love Is Everywhere (Beware)”](
I admit it. I have a soft spot for Uncle Tupelo. They were the first Americana artist I took to. Back then they called it alt-country, but that tag never really felt right to me. Their first few albums still resonate today. Jeff Tweedy has charted an impressive collection of solo records alongside those of Wilco, the band he founded upon Uncle Tupelo’s disintegration. “Love is Everywhere (Beware)” is one of the loveliest Tweedy songs to come along in some time, an easy-going folk song which harbors some uncomfortable questions about what is going on around us.
[Taylor Swift – “The Archer”](
Um, this is unexpected. I’m pretty sure this is the first time Taylor Swift has appeared on a playlist. If it wasn’t for the work of Jack Antonof, I’m not sure I would be so interested. And that would have been a mistake. There is much to like here and I’m going to go back and listen again right now and reflect on my own a-holeness.
[DIIV – “Skin Game”](
I’m a sucker for this stuff. Indie-Rock via a shoegazer prism, a song which builds in layers and intensity as it plays out. Bliss-pop vocals buried beneath the surface. Guitars pushed to the front. And a fuzz that sucks you in and sits you down amidst it all. Glorious.
[The Sound Of Arrows – “Into The Clouds”](
While reading up on the new Taylor Swift release “The Archer” I came across a reference for this song and was flab-ber-fucking-gasted that I had never heard this before. Because this was something that checked all of my 19 year old boxes. Unadulterated synth-pop. A flashback that wasn’t a flashback. I love this for so many reasons. It is guiltlessly earnest. The song evolves and builds and just when you think they’ve hit their stride they add another vocal melody and it’s on again.
[The Highwomen – “The Chain”](
Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires, Maren Morris, and Natalie Hemby have all made names for themselves in the world of Americana and Country music. They recently announced their new project with an appearance at the Newport Folk Festival and late-night television. They’ve already released a couple songs from their upcoming album ([here]( and[here]( but the song which will introduce them to the masses is this faithful yet goose-pimple producing cover of the classic Lindsey Buckingham written song for Fleetwood Mac. No matter if the song is something you remember and appreciate, or whether you’re discovering it for the first time, it’s just a great song and these women harmonize the ever-loving shit out of it.
[Chance The Rapper- “Do You Remember”](
Another gem from Chance The Rapper’s new album [The Big Day](sr_1_1?keywords=the+big+day&qid=1565741169&s=dmusic&sr=1-1). This one features Benjamin Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie. This just makes me smile.
[HAIM – “Summer Girl”](
The Sisters HAIM return just in time to remind us what a carefree Summer sing-along sounds like.
[snarls – “Walk In The Woods”](
There are so many adjectives I have for what this band from Columbus, OH. While they all bear some similarity to “charming” and “winsome.” For what it’s worth, the band brand themselves as âglitter emo alt rock.â I’m ok with that.
[THE CLASSIC: Â David Bowie – “I’m Afraid Of Americans”](
Because, reasons.

What are you going to wear? Sometimes itâs good to look at a few suggestions then add your own tweaks and ideas. Thatâs what these are for. The football calendar is a seemingly never-ending onslaught of news and stories that arenât actually newsworthy, but weâve finally made it back to action getting on the field with college ball kicking off this weekend. (Climbs onto high horse.) I find college football much more âromanticâ in the way that people are passionate about the game, from fans to the competitors themselves. Often times, thereâs a deeper rooting interest because itâs your alma mater or that of a loved one. That, and youâre watching 18-22 year olds out there putting their best effort in every play. Some for a chance to make it to the next level, some out of sheer unadulterated love of the game. If youâre jaded by the NFL news-monster, check out some of the primetime NCAA (a monster itself) games this weekend to see a what I mean. And below, for the bigger fans among us, what to wear for your kickoff house party or trip to the taphouse to cheer on âOld State.â And yes, it might be a bit muggy to wear this depending on location, but, c’mon. A guy can dream of fall, no?
[Style Scenario: What To Wear to a College Football Game Tailgate / Party (and actually look decent) | Dappered.com]
The âPoloâ: [Team Issue Performance Polo]( (price varies). You are an adult man. Do not put on an over-priced jersey. Especially when 1) Itâs the jersey a teenager is wearing on the field and 2) A teenager that is seeing zero financial benefit from your purchase, despite their grueling training and efforts for the field. Enter, the team issued polo. These, too, can be over-priced, but itâs a worthy splurge that can last for multiple seasons. Better than a plain-jane t-shirt, and even acceptable for casual Fridays in the office before a big game. The above option from Nike has nice retro-collegiate detailing in a unique off-white color. Want something a little more… traditional? [Try these new “tailgate” polos from Crique](. Deep placket, great cotton, sharp fit, and the collar has collar stays. Spendy as hell, but really nice.
The Jeans: [Amazon Goodthreads Athletic Fit Jeans â $40](. Whether youâre sitting or standing for long stretches, you want something that can move with you as you entertain (or be entertained) at a house party and the various activities that come with it, or running from the table to the bar for a fresh pint.
The Watch: [Seiko Sea Urchin Automatic – $137.59](. College is, wait for it, expensive. I know, profound. And a lot of people go years and years and years with the long tail of loans taking bites out of their paychecks. This watch is pretty darn affordable for what you get. Something you can wear the heck out of.
The Shoes: [Cole Haan Grand Pro Sneaker – $79.99]( clickid=QEi0gW0EJ3M4zsuULRSKgUNwUklVWRR63xA10I0 irgwc=1 cm_mmc=affil-_-Skimbit%20Ltd.) w/ OMGSHOES ($99.99). Keeping with the athletic-inspired retro-vibe, lean into the athletic adjacency with these kicks from Cole Haan. Exceptional comfort with high-quality leather to match. [Full review can be found here](.
The Belt: [Amazon Essentials Stretch Woven Belt in Navy – $19](. Something easily adjustable after a few pints and a dozen-or-more wings.
The Drink:Â A craft beer from your teamâs home state. For me, Iâm usually going with [an IPA from Troegs Independent Brewing](, Victory Brewing Company, or an âole reliable Yuengling lager.
The Between-Games/After Match Competition:Â Catch. Have a toss with [the official NCAA pigskin]( (or, [something a lot cheaper]() during half time or between the afternoon games while the second round of food is getting ready. Thereâs something beautiful about the simplicity of throwing a ball back and forth with people. And often, it spirals into running routes or a full-on pickup game.
The Prep & Postgame:Â [The MMQB Podcast]( and [SI NCAAF](. I love that there are so many niche and regional sports publications to get the latest and breaking news from, but when it comes to deep-dive editorial content, Sports Illustrated has always been my go-to. Check out the MMQB podcast for NFL stories on-the-go, and the SI NCAA Football page for nicely written pieces.
