Sometimes you just can’t, or, [don’t want to wear shorts](. But when [it’s blazing hot]( picking the wrong pair of trousers could leave you cooked. Not all pants are made for the high temps of the hottest season, but here are six types to look for, with affordable examples of each.
Tech Chino (full poly or a cotton/poly blend)
[Dappered.com](//oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=435081062 cid=67530 pcid=5211)
- [Old Navy Slim Go-Dry Built-In Flex Performance Pants â $49.99](//oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=435081062 cid=67530 pcid=5211)  ([review here]()
- [Banana Republic Core Temp Chinos â $58.80](//bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=1105419&pcid=35878&vid=1&pid=320597042) when 40% off ($98) ([review here]()
- [Lands’ End Straight Fit Stretch Golf Pants – $38.97](//www.landsend.com/products/mens-straight-fit-mi-pro-golf-pants/id_334454) when 40% off ($64.95)
- [Target Goodfellow Slim Fit Tech Chinos: â $29.99](Â ([review here]()
A lifesaver for those of us that run warm. These are made from poly or poly/cotton blend fabrics that have been engineered to breathe, wick away sweat, stretch like crazy, and dry quickly. Some are all polyester, and thus you’ll get the “swish” sound when you walk. Others like [BR’s outstanding core temp chinos]( are a cotton poly blend, and look and feel much more like a true all cotton chino.
Linen or Linen / Cotton Blends
- [Spier & Mackay Linen Trousers – $98](
- [Bonobos Linen Trousers – $125.80]( w/ SOLSTICE15 ($148)Â
- [Nordstrom 100% Linen Trousers – $74.49]( ($149)
- [GAP 63% Cotton / 37% Linen Slim Fit](//www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=440970002&pcid=999&grid=undefined_2_undefined_NaN) or [Straight Fit Chinos âÂ](//www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=441093012&pcid=999&grid=undefined_1_undefined_NaN)$42 when 40% off $69.95)
Quick, think of a fabric that gets worn almost exclusively in warm weather. You probably thought of linen. Linen’s almost translucent airiness is the choice for many who live year round in tropical climates. The one drawback? It’ll wrinkle like crazy. But that’s part of the appeal. It’s summer, it’s hot, so who cares about a few wrinkles? One way to mitigate that wrinkling is by weaving some cotton into the mix. Usually right around a 50/50 ratio, cotton/linen pants are a great choice for someone who likes the look and texture of linen, but doesn’t want that many wrinkles.
Lightweight Chino
[Dappered.com](
- [Bonobos Lightweight Chinos – $66.30]( w/ SOLSTICE15 ($78)Â
- [Banana Republic Core Temp Chinos â $58.80](//bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=1105419&pcid=35878&vid=1&pid=320597042) when 40% off ($98) ([review here]()
- [J.C.F Lightweight Chinos in Slim, Straight, or Athletic Fit â $35ish](//factory.jcrew.com/r/search/?Nloc=en&Ntrm=lightweight&Npge=1&Nrpp=60&N=16+10122)
- [GAP Wearlight Khakis in Slim](//www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=459829042&pcid=999&grid=undefined_0_undefined_NaN) or [Straight Fit with GapFlex â $36ish](//www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=459828042&pcid=999&grid=undefined_1_undefined_NaN) when 40% off ($59.95)
All cotton or almost all cotton (the rest being spandex) chinos that have lightened up specifically to be worn in the heat. These are not your Dad’s stiff work dockers from 1996. They might wrinkle a bit easier due to the thinner fabric, but your body will appreciate the airy crispness to the material. Yes, I’m including the cotton/poly BR core temp chinos here, in a 2nd category, but they honestly look and feel like an almost all cotton, lightweight chino. So it crosses over between tech AND lightweight. Meanwhile, the new Bonobos lightweight chinos are quite nice. 62% Cotton, 24% Polyester, 12% Rayon, and 2% Spandex. These don’t feel like a tech chino. At all. Which is interesting considering the blend. Lightweight for sure. Tech? Not so much. Still very comfortable and perfect for summer. Shown here and at the top of the post in a 34 x 30 athletic fit on 5’10” / 200lbs.
Oxford Cloth
[Dappered.com](//factory.jcrew.com/r/search/?Nloc=en&Ntrm=oxford&Npge=1&Nrpp=60&N=16+10122)
- [J Crew Factory Oxford Cloth Pants in Straight or Slim â $40ish](//factory.jcrew.com/r/search/?Nloc=en&Ntrm=oxford&Npge=1&Nrpp=60&N=16+10122)
- [Brooks Brothers Milano or Clark Fit Supima Oxford Chinos – $49.25](//www.brooksbrothers.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-brooksbrothers-Site/default/Search-Show?q=%22oxford%20chinos%22) ($98.50)
- [Bonobos Oxford Stretch Chinos – $74.80]( w/ SOLSTICE15 ($88)Â
Made in [the same oxford weave]( your favorite OCBD shirt comes in, only in a summer appropriate weight. Usually all cotton, and while they are comfortable, they don’t wick like a tech pant will, or breathe quite as well as linen in suffocating heat and humidity. Great for drier climates.
Lightweight Chambray
[Dappered.com](
- [J. Crew Stretch Chambray Pants in 484 Slim]( or [770 Straight Fit â $79.50](
- [EXPRESSÂ Extra Slim Light Blue Chambray Stretch Dress Pant – $40ish](//www.express.com/clothing/men/extra-slim-light-blue-chambray-stretch-dress-pant/pro/04763369C/color/LIGHT%20BLUE/?AID=11388515&PID=2178999&SID=4041899291&CID=550&pubname=ShopStyle+Inc.&pubID=2178999&CJEVENT=ede55d1490a911e981a501100a1c0e0d) when 40% off
- [Nordstrom 1901Â Skinny Fit Chambray Linen Blend Trousers – $49.75]( ($99.50) ([review here]()Â
The hyper-lightweight, super breathable cousin to denim. Usually around the same weight as a summerweight chino, these have a bit of texture and can be crisper feeling that other summer appropriate pants. They should be noticeably lighter than a stiff, classically styled chambray workshirt. That’s not the fabric you’re looking for here.
Fresco / Tropical Wool
[Dappered.com](
- [John W. Nordstrom Hopsack Flat Front Solid Wool Trousers – $71.60]( ($179)Â
- [Spier & Mackay Fresco Wool Trousers – $128 – $148](
- [Black Lapel Fresco Wool Toursers – $189](
- [Todd Snyder Tropical Wool Suit Trousers –Â $198](
The granddaddy of em’ all. Difficult to find but well worth it. Wool is the king of all fabrics. It breathes like crazy, regulates temperature, and has anti-stink properties. Perfect for the warmest months. But this type of wool is the exact opposite of the shaggy winter sweaters you wear on the coldest of days. This is a lean, mean, lightweight, crisp wool that almost feels cool to the touch. A bit spendy, but again… well worth it.

[Nordstrom Menâs Shop Roger Suede Double Monk Strap â $124.95](
Nordstrom’s in-house, exclusive brands like Calibrate, 1901, John W. Nordstrom, and Nordstrom’s Men’s Shop are quite nice for the price. [That’s been established](. They rarely miss on a product. And shoes aren’t easy to master. Lots of companies have tried to make good shoes for a not-too-expensive price, and failed miserably. But Nordstrom somehow gets it done and done well, with consistency.
These double monks are just more proof.

The âTan Suedeâ shown here is surprisingly nice. Itâs darker and richer than a sandy tan⦠more of a tobacco brown, but not a chocolate brown. It’s not some super-luxury suede [like the Massdrop Allen Edmonds](, but it’s got a good, noticeable nap to it, and no silly burnishing. They’re made in China, but that’s no surprise. They do NOT smell like gasoline out of the box, they’re soft to the touch, and they look and feel like a quality shoe.
[In Review: The Nordstrom Men's Shop Roger Suede Double Monk Strap | Dappered.com](
Yes they’ll excel in the warm weather. They could easily be swapped in [for the BR Suede Penny Loafers in all of the outfits seen here](. But these are absolutely a year round shoe (barring inclement weather). I can see them with jeans and a sportcoat (business mullet!) or with a navy or mid blue suit to dress down that suit a bit. [And who doesn’t want to get more use out of their suits?](
[In Review: The Nordstrom Men's Shop Roger Suede Double Monk Strap | Dappered.com](
They’ve got a great shape to them. Not overly elongated, not stumpy like a buck either. The toe box is nice and sleek, but not toe-crushingly short. I feel like I can speak on this topic. I have, wait for it, “tall toes.” So when a shoemaker slaps the roof of a shoe’s toes at super short levels, I feel it. I don’t feel that here.
[In Review: The Nordstrom Men's Shop Roger Suede Double Monk Strap | Dappered.com](
The welt is evenly (faux?) stitched, the non-slip subtle grip is a nice bonus, and the buckle placement is perfect. Put a buckle on a monk a little too close to the opening, or too close to the toe, and things start looking funny. Not here. They are a chrome-polish, but they’re gunmetal instead of a bright silver. So that knocks down the flash a little bit.
[In Review: The Nordstrom Men's Shop Roger Suede Double Monk Strap | Dappered.com](
Fit seems pretty true. A 10.5D fit my normally 10.5D feet pretty well. And thanks to the straps, you can cinch down or ease up depending on how your feet are feeling (cold? swelled up a bit from walking?) that day. That’s one of the benefits of a monk over just a regular slip on loafer. Insoles were nice and comfortable out of the box. Not running shoe comfy, but not cardboard and cement either. A bit of spring. Some give. Should get even more comfortable with wear.
Good shape. Nice materials. Contemporary but not silly or trendy. Accessible price. Ships and returns for free. Nordstrom does it once again.

[Spier & Mackay Angelico Wool Navy Blazer – $278](
About the Author:Â Ryan N. is a professional web developer for (and alum from) the University of Delaware, who keeps a close shave as to not be confused with his strongly-bearded twin brother. He plays guitar and drums, loves going to concerts with his wife, and loves being a dad.Â
Taking It Out of the Box
This is my second foray with Spier, but my initial thought was similar to the first one.. âDangit, I need to stop trying/reviewing stuff from Spier or Iâm just gonna buy something I donât need..â
[In Review: Spier & Mackay Angelico Navy Blazer | Dappered.com](
Patch pockets. Just quarter lined.Â
As always, Spier doesn’t disappoint with their packing job. Inside the speedily-received box is their signature navy garment bag, with the neatly-folded blazer tucked into itself by some kind of witchcraft sorcery to ensure it arrives wrinkle-free. Impressive.

Ryan N. is 5â9â, 155 and is wearing a slim fit 36R.
Under The Hood
This thing [is a true slim](. While it bears a lot of similarities to its texturier brother, [the Luigi Botto Waffle Texture Blazer](, the Angelico hugs a bit closer, leaving not even enough room for a slim sweater. Not that you’re wearing many lightweight sportcoats with another layer, since it’s summer (okay, summer doesn’t start till the 21st), amirite? You’ve got three inner pockets and the 100% Wool Serge Cloth offers just the right amount of stretch. Unpadded Spalla Camicia shoulders make it wear like a glove out of the box. Welcome to your new favorite navy blazer.
[In Review: Spier & Mackay Angelico Navy Blazer | Dappered.com](
Nice fabric. All wool, and offers a nice amount of ease of movement.
Fit and Finish
Per the writeup on [Spier’s website]( the new Angelico is an “updated version of their standard blazer, featuring softer shoulders, and a triple patch pocket.. softened, for a more casual look and feel” than their [Traditional]( Angelico. Gone are the front flap pockets and [Barchetta]( curved chest pocket, in favor of super-slim patch pockets for all. Looks just as slick, in my opinion. Two real horn buttons are again in a perfect stance, and tailor-friendly nonfunctional buttons round out the sleeves as always.
[In Review: Spier & Mackay Angelico Navy Blazer | Dappered.com](
Non functioning cuff buttons = major savings if you need to tailor the sleeves.
One thing that really stood out to me is the lack of shininess found on most traditional navy blazers. Spier takes everything “standard” about the classic navy blazer – gold buttons, flap pockets, single vent, shimmery glossy cloth – and turns it on its head with this one. The cloth is a more matte finish, but easily dresses up or down without reflecting like a disco ball.
[In Review: Spier & Mackay Angelico Navy Blazer | Dappered.com](
Available in either a slim fit (shown) or a more athletic, contemporary fit.
Final Thoughts
I mean, weâre spoiled with the form of Spier reviews around here, eh? They stay so consistent in quality and solid features that it’s sometimes hard to find new great things to say. Tip of the cap to Spier & Mackay for delivering a consistent experience for their customer base, which allows them to order online with confidence, which isn’t always easy in the world of online menswear.
