[Here’s why.]( Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend or a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below, plus bonus sales if need be. Included are a few picks worth pointing out. [Allen Edmonds: Up to $150 off Shoes / 40% off Bags Father’s Day Sale]( [Allen Edmonds]( - [Independence Collection Jefferson Wingtip Oxford – $380]( ($530) - [Independence Collection Bartlett Cap-toe Oxford – $380]( ($530) - [Korchmar Outpost Charcoal Twill Field Brief – $390]( ($650) - [Korchmar Outpost Charcoal Twill Duffel Bag – $390]( ($650) - [McAllister Wingtip Oxford – $295]( ($395) - [St. John’s Double Monk Strap – $295]( ($395) - [Carlyle Plain Toe Oxford – $295]( ($395) - [Cornwallis Dress Oxford – $295]( ($395) Lots of good stuff here. And those made in the USA Korchmar bags? $260 off. Not bad at all. Mighty handsome looking for sure. Shoe sale includes the higher end “Independence” line, but it’s not limited to that line either. Size shown on that slim luxe touch polo above is a large on 5’10” / 200lbs. And that smart weight suit jacket? Unlined for extra ventilation, and the almost half and half wool/poly fabric is made to be lightweight and breathable. Could be a real winner for those that run warm? I thought this was set to expire with the other long-weekend sales. Nnnnnnope. Guess not. Now it’s a “Spring Shirt Sale.” Well okay then. Sure, you gotta buy in bulk, but there are a lot of professional suit and tie types who love them some Brooks Brothers non iron dress shirts. Lots of styles and fits to pick from. [Hautelook: Cole Haan Shoes]( & [Accessories/Clothes Events]( [Hautelook]( - [Cole Haan Suede Varsity Jacket – $249.97]( ($525) - [Cole Haan Cambridge Wingtip Oxford – $119.97]( ($260) - [Cole Haan Grand Crosscourt Turf Sneaker in Ivory – $79.97]( ($150) - [Cole Haan Grand Crosscourt Turf Sneaker in Navy/Ink – $89.97]( ($150) Not bad. Some tempting stuff in there. Most would agree that Cole Haan full price just isn’t realistic. But they’re always on sale, and by the time they hit the flash sale sites (like Nordstrom’s Haute Look) the prices get much more palatable. No free shipping and returns here though, since it’s not through Nordy’s main site. [Nordstrom: Half-Yearly Still going Strong (exp 6/3)]( [Nordstrom]( - [Nordstrom Trim Fit Mélange Sport Coat – $149.49]( ($299) - [Nordstrom EXTRA Trim Fit Dress Shirts – $32.90]( ($49.50) - [Nordstrom Tech-Smart Trim Fit Stretch Wool Travel Trousers – $64.49]( ($129) - [Cole Haan Pinch LX Sneaker – $89.90]( ($150) Speaking of Nordstrom… Still going strong. Doesn’t end until Monday June 3rd. Yes, some things have sold out. But the above picks have not! [Full picks can be found here if you don’t want to scroll through 80+ pages](. Also worth a mention: - [J. Crew](: 25% off 1, 30% off 2, 40% off 3 select styles w/ NOTSOBASIC - [UNIQLO]( They’re running what feels like a sizable mid-season clearance in their sale section. [Here’s why.]( NOTE: Prices on liquor can vary, wildly, depending on location (laws, taxes, availability, etc). That’s why the prices listed below have the “ish” moniker after them. Spring is here, and summer is coming. While there are many cocktails, liquors, and beers that work well in the warmer weather, I would argue none are more refreshing than gin. Light bodied, floral and citrus, this spirit feels tailor made for the sunshine. Gin, a botanical spirit, is often used as a base for some delicious cocktails; the negroni, the martini, and of course, the gin & tonic. There are excellent gins to use to build a superior cocktail. On the flipside, there are indeed gins best enjoyed on the rocks, or even neat. These are, of course, a bit more expensive, but work well as a gift or a special treat for a summer holiday or special occasion. Read on to check out my picks for gins to seek out, and how to enjoy them. The Straight Drinkers These picks are worthy of a direct pour into your high-ball glass. Drink neat or with two cubes, and you’re in for a treat. Monkey 47 – $80ish [The Gins of Spring (and summer) - A Salute to this warm weather Spirit | Dappered.com] This one, oh my. The average gin uses five or six botanicals for flavoring. Monkey 47 uses, yep, you guessed it, 47. The end result is a superior spirit: impossibly smooth and deeply complex, offering floral, citrus, and spice notes in a beautiful harmony. At around $80, it’s more than I would usually spend on a gin, but is excellent for a summer celebration of sorts like a wedding anniversary or birthday. Empress 1908 – $40ish [The Gins of Spring (and summer) - A Salute to this warm weather Spirit | Dappered.com] If ever there was a gin to use as a conversation piece, this is it. Because… this gin is blue. I want to tell you it’s blue because it’s Canadian, but that’s a lie. The color [stems from the use of butterfly pea blossoms]( steeped into the gin post-distillation. Very cool. I tasted citrus- specifically grapefruit and orange- and juniper. A classic, but higher level tasting gin in a non-classic hue. The Botanist Islay – $35ish [The Gins of Spring (and summer) - A Salute to this warm weather Spirit | Dappered.com] This was the first “top shelf” gin I ever had, and the difference was immediately apparent. The Botanist uses 22 botanicals from its native Islay for flavor. To my taste, this gin leans toward citrus and mint, reminiscent of a mint lemonade. It is exceptionally refreshing. I love it over ice, with just a quick squeeze from a lime wedge, with a book in hand on the patio. The Mid-Shelf Mixers Opt for these if you want a go-to gin to stash on your bar cart for making a martini or gin & tonic to refresh after a long, hot day. These gins will still stand out in unique flavor in a cocktail. Aviation Gin – $27ish [The Gins of Spring (and summer) - A Salute to this warm weather Spirit | Dappered.com] It seems every celebrity has his or her own booze, but Aviation Gin was established well before it’s new owner Ryan Reynolds took helm. A spice-forward American made gin, this works well in an extra dry martini or with a quality tonic water. Drinkers will notice the spicier-than-average flavor come through. Unique. Hendrick’s – $40ish [The Gins of Spring (and summer) - A Salute to this warm weather Spirit | Dappered.com] In contrast to the Aviation Gin, I find Hendrick’s to offer a sweeter touch, but not like The Botanist above. This one is like biting into a flower. Very floral, with a refreshing cucumber taste. Hendrick’s must add cucumber in some form to their distillation process, because the flavor is quite apparent. Choose Hendrick’s, and you’ll get both a solid neat-drinking gin AND a superior mixer. As such, it is a bit pricier than the other choices in this category, and borders on top shelf (for gin), at about $45. Bluecoat – $30ish [The Gins of Spring (and summer) - A Salute to this warm weather Spirit | Dappered.com] An American made, London dry gin. They call it an American dry gin, but it evokes the style of the London dry gin. Clever branding and a beautiful bottle makes this a great addition to the shelf if for no other reason. Thankfully, it’s a quality gin for a great price. It can be found at about $30. Tanqueray Rangpur [The Gins of Spring (and summer) - A Salute to this warm weather Spirit | Dappered.com] If you’ve had gin, you’ve probably had Tanqueray. A stalwart in bars across the world for overpriced gin & tonics, Tanqueray is to gin as [Buffalo Trace Straight Bourbon is to bourbon](. That is, an always available reliable choice. BUT, this version adds Rangpur limes for an amped-up fruitiness. If you’re seeking a fruit-forward cocktail, this is the gin I’d grab. The Economy Picks: Beefeater – $16ish & New Amsterdam – $12ish [The Gins of Spring (and summer) - A Salute to this warm weather Spirit | Dappered.com] If you’re throwing a BBQ, or just having a small get together, and want an option for gin drinkers – go with one of these. Delicious gins without breaking the bank, these options work best in cocktails. To be honest, I don’t taste anything unique about these, and wouldn’t drink them on their own. On the flipside, there’s nothing bad about them. The Beefeater is a traditional London dry gin, while the New Amsterdam does much of the same at almost half the cost. I once bought a 1.5L bottle of New Amsterdam for $20 and proceeded to make gin & tonics for approximately 6 months. It’s called an economy pick for a reason. [Here’s why.]( [Bulova Oceanographer Devil Diver – $500]( – [$600]( ($795) NOTE: The big long weekend sales seem to have ended, but be aware that while this thing was sold out for the longest time, various retailers seem to be carrying it now. Depending on the promo they’re running, price can run anywhere from $475 ([Bloomingdale’s over the long weekend]( and [Macy’s was close to that price too]( to $600. Right now, Macy’s has it for $572.40 with code SHOP. If you want to take the risk [of ordering from a gray market dealer](, you won’t get a manufacturer’s warranty, but you will save a bunch. About a year ago, I was travelling to Florida and had a layover in Charlotte. Wanting to kill the time, I walked around the terminal and made my way to one of the watch stores, where I saw an assortment of Balls, Seikos, Citizens and Bulovas. I walked from case to case, and took my time admiring the dozens of watches I saw. In the back of the Bulova display, behind all the ([horrifying-looking]() precisonist models, I saw a cool looking retro diver tucked in the back. Curious, I asked to see it, and I was disappointed. The polish on the case seemed cheap, the bracelet rattled like it actually was from the 70s, and I just left with a very poor impression of the watch. A year came and went, and the other day I was doing some shopping at the Naval Exchange and I saw the same Bulova in the case. I had some time to kill, and so I had the counter worker pull it out for me to handle. It almost seemed like a different watch! This one seemed well polished, the bracelet still rattled but somehow didn’t seem cheap, and the dial was just amazing. I am very set against impulse purchases, but I walked out of the store wearing it. [In Review: The Bulova Devil Diver Automatic | Dappered.com]( Cost I paid approximately $630 for the watch, tax free at the NEX. [If you get it from Macy’s]( it’s around the same price, [or you can get it grey market from Amazon for substantially less](. I’ve used an Authorized Dealer warranty before (something you don’t get on the gray market), so I try to shop through the proper channels these days. Dial This is the part that sells the entire watch for me. The dial is a 1:1 perfect re-creation of the original from the early 70s. The lettering is all period-correct, the hands are chunky and vintage looking, and the indices are the same giant cups full of lume as on the original. The large indices create a very 3 dimensional look that is accentuated by the boxy sapphire crystal. Stylistically, the face is quartered by a large red cross-hair, and the depth is listed in feet as 666 (hence the nickname “Devil Diver”). The one failing is that the cyclops is crooked, though this is the same across every sample they had at the counter. The lume is very bright, and glows a strong green through the night. Several times when I woke up to take out the dog, I could easily read the time in total darkness. [In Review: The Bulova Devil Diver Automatic | Dappered.com]( Case The case is a cushion style, with heavy curving on the sides to hug the wrist. The entire thing is finished with a mirror polish. The caseback itself is very plain, and just an inexpensive screw down back. The crown is a signed screw-down. The shape and complexity of the case does a lot to give the watch it’s authentic vibe. Unlike the original, the modern one is 44mm rather than 40mm, and that’ll be too big for some. The bezel is a 120 click unidirectional like the original, and features an identical acrylic bezel. [In Review: The Bulova Devil Diver Automatic | Dappered.com]( 44mm case next to a [41mm Corgeut (Tudor Homage)](. Movement This is the only real deal breaker for some people. Though they don’t say which model, the Devil Diver uses a low-end Miyota automatic to keep time. Though it can hand-wind, it does not feature hacking, which at over $600 is a little shocking. Still, I imagine the complexity of the dial and case contributed to the cost, and the Miyota was Bulova’s way of keeping the cost down. A special edition orange version is available with a Swiss movement, though [at nearly three times the price](. So far, the movement has been accurate, and Miyotas are reliable enough that I didn’t mind. [In Review: The Bulova Devil Diver Automatic | Dappered.com]( Bracelet This will be hit or miss for some folks, but I think it suits the watch, however much it rattles. The bracelet features solid links and end-links, split pins, and a sort of faux-jubilee style. The end-links perfectly fit with the lugs. The clasp is a simple stamped dive clasp with a safety and a divers extension. Bulova is engraved in the clasp in a mid-century modern font. [In Review: The Bulova Devil Diver Automatic | Dappered.com]( Overall Impression I like it. It’s a super retro design at a reasonable price. I’ve seen some people compare it to the Seiko Turtle family of watches, but holding them both, the Bulova is the cooler watch. I know they’re not the same quality, but the Bulova is great for scratching [that Doxa itch](. Both have a stong 70s style and a history of both recreational and professional diving. Though I rarely if ever spend this much on a watch, I feel I got value for my purchase.
