Sometimes it’s good to look at a few suggestions then add your own tweaks and ideas. That’s what these are for. Fall is fun for men’s style for a lot of reasons, not least of which is the ability to wear fabrics you’d never be able to wear in the warmer months. Flannel is one of those fabrics. Here’s one way to take a couple of suit separates that easily could be worn on their own, yet combined here, and still not look too stuffy or old fashioned. [Style Scenario: All Business & Flannel for Fall | Dappered.com] The Suit: [Spier & Mackay Vitale Barberis Canonico Flannel Sportcoat – $328]( & [Matching Trousers – $138]( Did you know that Spier’s new flannel sportcoats can be matched up with their flannel trousers to make a whole suit? Me neither. Not until I finally noticed the “Matching Jacket Available” [under the description of the trousers](. Total cost is $466. Not available in your size? [Try Suitsupply]( although that’ll cost you quite a bit more. Want to dress this down a bit? Guess what. Swap out the trousers for jeans and you’re golden. The Sweater: [UNIQLO Extra Fine Merino V-Neck in Dark Gray – $39.90]( Mixing grays in fall and winter can really work, especially if you reverse the usual script (dark gray as the main, light gray as the accent) and layer a dark gray sweater under a light gray suit or sportcoat. The Shirt: [Amazon Buttoned Down Light Blue Stretch Pima Cotton Dress Shirt – $49.00](. Or, whatever your favorite light blue dress shirt happens to be. And like the watch, something a bit thicker/more casual works great with a flannel suit sans tie. The Boots: [Allen Edmonds Nomad Chukkas – $207]( ($345). Not some slick as hell Chelsea, and not some dumpy desert boot either. Right in-between. And super comfortable. Got a pair in this snuff suede for myself during a big clearance event, and I’m super happy with them. The contrast sole here plays well into the dressed up but not taking it too seriously theme. I have had, and added to, this bag of buttons for at least twenty years. It holds all of the extra spare buttons that have come with the clothing I have purchased (shirts not withstanding, those extra buttons stay on the lower placket where they’ve been sewed on at the factory). I have never taken a button out of this bag. It is one-way traffic for the buttons. It is [the Hotel California]( for buttons. They can check out anytime they like, but they can never leave. I cannot bring myself to throw the new spare buttons away. That would be irresponsible. I have a new garment. What if this is the time that my incredible run of button luck should come to an end? Yet I never take out the old buttons. So now it’s just one deafening cacophony of fasteners, the chaos rendering the whole useless, since I’ll almost certainly never be able to find the button that, as so far, I have never needed. These buttons haven’t just been orphaned, they’ve been purposefully created to be ostracized, perhaps permanently. Estranged from their kind, damned to spend their days carrying with them the burden of almost certain uselessness, cursed to bathe in the macabre longing for schadenfreude, for without calamity materializing upon his brother, these buttons are doomed. They make nice quality, Goodyear Welted shoes in the UK and their prices are pretty reasonable. Especially on sale. The only problem is getting your hands on a pair. I don’t know if it was a customs decision or the looming Brexit or an exchange rate thing or what, but a lot of retailers just flat out stopped carrying or shipping Loake Shoes to the USA. The Amazon fulfilled East Dane is one of the rare few that still has them. And maybe now they’re blowing out the last of their stock? I don’t know if this is it for East Dane and Loake, but what I do know is that unlike Massdrop (one of the other few, stateside resources for Loake), East Dane ships and returns things for free. Right away. No waiting for a pre-order. And these shoes aren’t final sale. Yet. NOTE THAT SIZES ARE LISTED IN UK. So use those conversion charts. Also note that East Dane, for some reason, gives limited sizing recommendations, but those recs are still in UK sizes. So they’ll say something like “runs small, order 1/2 size up… in your UK size.” So say you’re a size 10.5 in the US. convert that to UK, which is 9.5. And then size up half a size to a 10 UK… which is only down half a size from your normal US size. Got that? Clear as mud? Sweet. off we go. Pretty sure the East Dane option is a slightly warmer brown than what’s shown above.
